U.S. News and World Report Ranks Lees-McRae College Among the Best Regional Colleges in the South

Sept. 11, 2014. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, U.S. News & World Report released their annual rankings of colleges and universities. In the 30th edition of this report, Lees-McRae was ranked among the best regional colleges in the south. This year the College climbed 16 spots on the list for a tie with Bluefield College for 54th place.

Regional colleges are defined as undergraduate-focused schools with diverse programs including business, education and nursing with fewer than half of degrees granted in the liberal arts.

LMCLees-McRae ranked ahead of several North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, peer institutions such as University of Mount Olive, Methodist University, Shaw University, Livingstone College and Greensboro College and Conference Carolinas competitor Limestone College.

“I am so proud of the Lees-McRae faculty, staff, alumni and trustees as we continue to elevate the College,” said President Barry M. Buxton. “I am pleased to see our efforts recognized by national and regional experts.”

According to the U.S. News & World Report methodology, “[The rankings] allow you to compare at a glance the relative quality of institutions based on such widely accepted indicators of excellence as freshman retention and graduation rates and the strength of the faculty…The rankings formula gives significant weight to the opinions of those in a position to judge a school’s undergraduate academic excellence. The academic peer assessment survey allows presidents, provosts and deans of admissions to account for intangibles at peer institutions such as faculty dedication to teaching.”
