Feb. 19, 2013. Appalachian State University’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is celebrating the opening of five new exhibitions during their Winter Exhibition Celebration on Friday, March 1, 2013 as part of Downtown Boone’s First Friday Art Crawl. From 7-9 p.m., the Turchin Center will be open for all visitors to come and celebrate the new artwork on display, listen to live music by the band The Lucky Strikes and enjoy a refreshing beverage from the cash bar. Many of the artists will be in attendance including Polish artist in residence Monika Kostrzewa. A special “Donors Only” preview will be held prior to the reception from 6-7 p.m. Admission is free and more information can be found at http://tcva.org/calendar/events/825.

The new exhibitions being celebrated on March 1 are 10th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition; Standing Still…in the Abstract: Sculptures, Paintings and Drawings by Mary-Ann Prack; Art Expo 2013: Annual Juried Student Exhibition; Behind the Scenes: TCVA Community Outreach Teachers and the final installment of the international exhibition series 21 Sztuka: Contemporary Art from Poland I-V,featuring artwork by Polish artists Monika Kostrzewa and her work titled Monika Izabela Kostrzewa—Visual Art and fashion, Maciej Guźniczak and his work titledFaithful to Blackand Alexander Wereszka and his work titled Intimacy Areas.   

10th Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition

The 10th annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition (AMPC) is a program of Appalachian’s Outdoor Programs in partnership with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It has become a prominent regional competition, attracting the work of amateur and professional photographers from across the country and allowing them the opportunity to celebrate the unique people, places and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachian mountains. International Focus Exhibition Series I-V:

V. Polish Artists Group Exhibition

The Polish Artists Group Exhibition is the final of five exhibitions in the International Focus Series I-V: 21 Szutka: Contemporary Art of Poland. A group exhibition of contemporary artists living and working in Poland, the displayed work will include fashion art, painting and graphic arts.  The featured artists include: Maciej Guźniczak whose graphic arts work is titled Faithful to Black; Monika Kostrzewa whose fashion arts and fibers work is titled Monika Izabela Kostrzewa-Visual Art and Fashion; and Alexander Wereszka whose artwork is titled Intimacy Areas.  Monika Kostrzewa will be at Appalachian State doing an artist residency from February 26- March 4 where she will be installing her work in the galleries and meeting with students and community members. About the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts

The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts presents exhibition, education and collection programs that support Appalachian State University’s role as a key regional educational, cultural and economic resource.

The Turchin Center is located at 423 West King St., in Boone. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Tues.-Thurs. and Saturday, and Noon-8 p.m., Friday. The Center is closed Sunday and Monday, and observes all university holidays. There is no admission charge, although donations are gratefully accepted.
