Tunnel of Oppression Event Hosted by ASU Student Government Association on Dec. 6

Dec. 4, 2012. Appalachian State University’s Student Government Association will host a Tunnel of Oppression event on Dec. 6 from 5:30 – 10 p.m. to raise campus familiarity with issues related to cruelty and brutality. The public is invited.

The SGA annually sponsors the event by gathering club volunteers to demonstrate negative acts of coercion through dramatizations. It is an educational and awareness-driven campaign that sheds light on the severity of oppression.

A tunnel-type simulation will be set up in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union. Students and faculty will see skits as they walk through the passageway and have follow-up discussions about their experiences.

“This year the tunnel exhibits a wide range of oppression issues,” said Tommy Wrenn, SGA’s director of cultural affairs. “We are really excited for this event. It encompasses issues of oppression that are on our campus, in our nation and around the world.”

The scenes this year will be provided by the Women’s Center, Hispanic Student Association, Asian Student Association, Muslim Student Association, and others.
