TubeFest at Green Valley Park Held Saturday, Aug. 23

RAFTING-1

Aug. 11, 2014. On Saturday, Aug. 23, Green Valley Park will host TubeFest 2014. This is an opportunity for members of the community and visitors to enjoy floating down the scenic New River and help support Green Valley Park, which has been developed my a local nonprofit with assistance from Watauga County and many other wonderful donors and sponsors over the years.

A ride of approximately one hour will cost $10 per tube with a special family rate of $40 per family. Rides include shuttle service from the Park to the starting point for the river float. A hot dog plate lunch will be available for $3 and water or soda for $1 each.

The first shuttle should leave the park at 10 a.m. and the last one will depart just before 4 p.m. Two area rafting companies are providing the tubes and shuttles for TubeFest 2014 and friends of the Park and members of the Park Board of Directors are fixing the food. Green Valley Park gear will also be for sale. Bring a soccer ball or a Frisbee. Volunteers to help staff the event are appreciated. For more information, visit www.GreenValleyPark.org.

Green Valley Park was one of the intended beneficiaries of a 2012 Federal Recreation Trails Program Grant Recommendation with the Watauga County Tourism Development Authority as the sponsor of record. The sum of the grant requested and approved was $75,000. This grant was to develop paddle access areas at Green Valley and Pine Run Parks, which are major elements of the planned South Fork New River Paddle Trail and Greenway. Due to changed priorities of the Watauga County Tourism Development Authority, the grant was delayed and ultimately transferred to High Country Pathways.

Green Valley Community Park, Inc., a nonprofit, currently needs to raise $15,000 to qualify for this portion of the grant, which will greatly improve the canoe ramp at the Park and also build a paved walking trail around the soccer fields and complete the stairway from the picnic shelter on the bluff to the soccer field.
