The N.C. Department of Transportation shifted traffic onto the future northbound lanes of 1.3 miles of newly constructed lanes on U.S. 321 in between Norwood Circle and Food Lion this week.

This is part of the U.S. 321 widening project through Blowing Rock. The recent shift allows for the construction of the future southbound lanes while traffic comes and goes throughout the day.

In announcing the future shift last week, the N.C. Department of Transportation said that occasional lane closures will be par for the course and that drivers should stay alert for flaggers and equipment along the project’s footprint.

At a meeting with Blowing Rock citizens urging the state and contractors to complete this project quicker, NCDOT officials said that this traffic switch would show noticeable progress in the widening of U.S. 321. This meeting was held at the end of June.

The portion of highway through the core of Blowing Rock was initially slated to be complete by 2014. The NCDOT now estimates it to be complete by the fall of 2016.
