TCPO to Kick Off Free Todd Summer Music Series with Joseph Houck This Weekend

By Jessica Isaacs | jessica@highcountrypress.com

The historic community of Todd will kick off its summer concert series this weekend with local artist Joseph Houck in Cook Memorial Park on Saturday, June 11. This free outdoor music series offers free fun for the whole family that you definitely don’t want to miss!

This concert series will offer seven outdoor music events at no cost for guests between June and August and is made possible by the Todd Community Preservation Organization, a nonprofit group aimed at maintaining the area’s natural resources and cultural heritage.

In addition to hosting the summer music series, the TCPO manages and operates two local parks, one of which plays host to these events every year.

Located equidistant between Boone and West Jefferson, Todd offers boundless opportunities for outdoor fun and a rich storied past, making these outdoor summer concerts just one more reason to enjoy the area this summer.

“The main road through town is called Todd Railroad Grade Road. It used to be the railroad bed and its flat and it goes all the way from Todd to Fleetwood, so it’s a biker’s paradise,” said TCPO member Susan McBurney. “It follows along the south fork of the New River, so there are bicyclers all over the place, as well as kayakers, tubers and hikers.

“Todd is also very historic. It’s not large, but almost every building downtown is on the National Registry of Historic Places. It used to be bigger than Boone, they say, because the Virginia Creeper train used to stop here.”

The summer concerts take place at Cook Memorial Park in downtown Todd and will begin at 6 p.m. on select dates.

The fun begins this weekend with Appalachian native Joseph Houck, who recently released a new folk-American album called Roam. He’s no stranger to the High Country music scene, and there’s no doubt you’ll enjoy his locally influenced sound.

Hamburgers and hotdogs will be available for purchase, and any proceeds collected during the event will support the TCPO’s two community parks.
