The community of Todd will hold the third night of its summer concert series on Saturday, July 2 at 6 p.m. Come out to see musician Wayne Henderson & Friends continue the free, outdoor music fun this weekend in Cook Memorial Park!
The Todd Community Preservation Organization, a nonprofit group that maintains the area’s natural resources and cultural heritage, hosts the free concert series each summer, which takes place rain or shine in one of two local parks that the TCPO manages.
Todd, located between Boone and West Jefferson, is a town with both a rich history and many opportunities for outdoor activities. Almost every building downtown is on the National Registry of Historic Places, said TCPO member Susan McBurney, and the main road follows along the south fork of the New River, so hikers, bikers, kayakers and tubers are abundant.

The summer concert series offers locals and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful area with free, family-friendly live music. The concerts have been growing in attendance as people hear about them, McBurney said, and about 300 people attended the second night of the series. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be for sale at the events, with all proceeds benefiting the TCPO’s community parks.
“I think people love this series because it’s just so relaxed and very friendly,” McBurney said. “People bring their dogs, their families, their kids, and I think most of the music brings people in. It’s lively and fun music.”

Wayne Henderson is world-renowned both as a guitarist and as a luthier. He plays Americana and traditional Appalachian music, and his playing has been enjoyed around the world as well as at his home in Grayson County, Virginia. He produces about 20 instruments each year, most of them guitars, and there is a waiting list for the chance to own one of his carefully-crafted instruments. Henderson was also the convocation speaker at Appalachian State University in 2014 and the subject of the book Clapton’s Guitar: Watching Wayne Henderson Build the Perfect Instrument by Allen St. John.
