April 11, 2013. Dog obedience classes will begin May 1 at the Avery County Humane Society. Melissa McKinnon, of Woof Pack Pet Services, will conduct the classes on 6 consecutive Wednesdays. McKinnon is a graduate of Animal Behavior College and is an ABC Certified Dog Trainer.
The Puppy Kindergarten, for puppies 4 months to 1 year, will begin at 6pm. This class focuses on socialization, leash walking, and 6 of the basic commands. The Basic Obedience/Canine Good Citizen class, for dogs over 1 year, will begin at 7pm. This class covers 12 basic commands and proper leash walking.
“We are excited to offer these classes,” said Bruce Malfatone, executive director at the humane society. “Melissa has a wonderful reputation for helping people have happy, well-behaved dogs. And she is discounting the cost for any dog adopted from us.” The cost for the 6-week course is $175 for the public but only $150 for any dog adopted from the Avery County Humane Society.
To reserve a spot for your puppy or dog, contact woofpackpetservices@yahoo.com or 828-773-4811. Proof of rabies and distemper is required.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the humane society. Several adult dogs are available for adoption at the humane society. For example, Todd, a foxhound, has completed the Leash on Life basic obedience; he will likely excel in McKinnon’s class.
