1) Local Author’s Book Set in Boone Available for 99 Cent on Kindle for Limited Time

Author C.S. Thompson announces the release of the second book in his mystery/fable series, Jasper Lilla and the Hendersonville Rescue, which is set in the charming atmosphere of Boone, N.C.

Jasper Lilla and the Hendersonville Rescue was released on July 11, 2015 at a special introductory price on Kindle of only 99 cents through July 18. Readers are invited to enjoy this series as the mysteries surrounding main character Jasper Lilla continue to unfold.

“Just like in book one, Jasper Lilla and the Wolves of Banner Elk,” said Thompson. “Jasper Lilla and the Hendersonville Rescue will continue to surround the likable seventeen year old with interesting and quirky friends, nasty villains, and another surprise ending that even the most astute reader won’t see coming.”

The Jasper Lilla Chronicles are a great read for those who enjoy in-depth character development along with mystery and adventure.

“The plot for Book Two picks up where Book One ends, with a discovery that rocks his sense of identity and his understanding of how the universe works,” adds Thompson. “Then, just when everything seems to click into place for him, the thing he holds most dear is taken away.  Making it right again will require a skill only he possesses, but to make it right he’ll have to lie to his mother, lie to his school, and avoid a police detective he knows he cannot trust.”

If readers prefer to have a hard copy, they can get 25% off by using the discount code (B6U8GXGL) on Thompson’s website listed below. To learn more about the series and other books by C.S. Thompson, visit www.whymystery.com.

2) Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic Returns Aug. 15-16

Amateur and professional photographers can now register for the Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic, a two-day seminar that offers presentations from outstanding photojournalists and opportunities for participants to improve their skills.

The clinic, set for Aug. 15-16, also allows participants the rare prospect of photographing scenic Grandfather Mountain at dawn and dusk and chances to network with others interested in the craft.

The 2015 speakers include:

– Donnie Roberts, chief photographer at The Dispatch in Lexington, N.C.;

– Rob Knight, professional photographer, educator and Photoshop Lightroom expert;

– Jerry Wolford, editorial photojournalist and 2015 NPPA “Photographer of the Year;”

– Brent Walker, photographer and storyteller behind “The Hidden South,” a project documenting those “unseen” by society.

The Camera Clinic was originally organized in 1952 by the late Hugh Morton, developer of Grandfather Mountain and a distinguished photographer.

“The Camera Clinic is one of the highlights of the year for those who love photographing at Grandfather Mountain,” said Kellen Short, director of marketing and communications. “Even those outside the photojournalism world will find these presentations enlightening and educational.”

Admission to the event is free for working photojournalists and active members of the N.C. Press Photographers Association. Admission for all others is $50 and includes a buffet dinner on Saturday.

Online registration opened July 15 at grandfather.com. Anyone wishing to secure a spot must purchase a $50 pass online; the charge will be refunded to those who show valid press credentials or an NCPPA membership card at check-in.

A discounted two-day admission ticket is available for $30 for guests of Clinic participants who wish to enjoy the park but do not plan to attend the seminars. This ticket allows guests to come and go as they please Aug. 15 and 16. Guests may also purchase tickets for the Saturday buffet dinner for $10.

Basic campsites are available in the Grandfather Mountain Woods Walk Picnic Area for those participating in the clinic.

4) Lockn’ Festival in Virginia to Feature Mad Dogs & Englishmen in September

In 2013, Lockn’ Festival and Tedeschi Trucks Band began discussions to collaborate with Joe Cocker for a special event.  This planned collaboration would have brought together Tedeschi Trucks Band with Joe Cocker and some original members of Mad Dogs & Englishmen and other guest artists.

The idea was well received, but sadly, Joe Cocker died, after a long illness, in December 2014.  However, the idea has survived.

In his honor, Tedeschi Trucks Band will host Mad Dogs & Englishmen, a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration, exclusive to the 2015 Lockn’ Festival, to celebrate Joe Cocker.  This not-to-be-missed event will feature a lineup that must be seen to be believed.

Original Mad Dogs & Englishmen members include: Leon Russell (guitar and keyboards), Rita Coolidge (vocals), Bobby Jones (vocals), Claudia Lennear (vocals – 20 Feet From Stardom), Chris Stainton (keyboards – Eric Clapton, The Who), Chuck Blackwell (percussion – Everly Brothers), Bobby Torres (percussion), Pamela Polland (vocals – Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt), Matthew Moore (vocals) and Daniel Moore (vocals).

Special guests include: Chris Robinson (Black Crowes), Dave Mason (Traffic), Doyle Bramhall II, Anders Osbourne (Galactic),  Alecia Chakour (Warren Haynes Band), Shannon McNally and more.

 The 2015 Lockn’ Festival is September 10-13 at the Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, Virginia and will also feature Robert Plant & Sensational Space Shifters performing 2 nights with 2 different sets, Phil Lesh & Friends with Carlos Santana, Jorma & Jack celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Jefferson Airplane, Widespread Panic with special guest Jimmy Cliff,  Gov’t Mule, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, The Doobie Incident featuring The Doobie Brothers with The String Cheese Incident, Little Feat, St. Paul & The Broken Bones and many more.
