2) LMC Cycling Offers Ride-Along Trips in July

Lees-McRae Director of Cycling Tim Hall has released the following letter below in regards to the July ride-along trips:

Fellow Bobcat,

You and I need to stay connected.  As a former member of the Lees-McRae Cycling program you have a unique perspective of what is needed to make the program successful.

I am reaching out to you so we can go on a ride, share our stories, reconnect or get to know one another better. I am willing to bet our stories will make the miles go by quickly and that strong bonds may form that will benefit us both.

I am putting together a few informal road rides this summer and I hope you will say yes to one or more of these opportunities. I promise to show you a good ride with beautiful views and to not leave you behind or drop you! The dates are all on Friday: July 3, July 10, and July 24. We will meet at 9:30 a.m. at our gymnasium parking lot on Hickory Nut Gap Road and we plan to roll out at 10 a.m.

I hope you will say yes to my invitation. Either way, kindly RSVP by emailing me at hallt@lmc.edu. Even if we cannot ride together, I’m sure meeting you would be time well spent. I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Sincerely,

Tim Hall
Head Cycling Coach

3) “Otto Wood” Play Enters Its Second Week

Audience members from as far away as Nevada turned out for the first week of Otto Wood: The Bandit’s 2015 season.

Todd Felts, of Reno, son of former North Wilkesboro Police Chief and Building Inspector David Felts, was among those who came to the show on Thursday night, the official opening night of the season.

Also among the crowd were at least four couples from Salisbury – where the notorious outlaw was killed by police.

Cast and crew, however, had been at The Record Park all week for nightly dress rehearsals.

Otto Wood: The Bandit returns this week to The Record Park at the corner of Fourth and E streets North Wilkesboro. Remaining shows are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, July 1, 2, 3, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 9, 10, 11. There will be no show on July 4.

The show details the life of Wilkes outlaw Otto Wood, a Depression-era desperado, who was killed in a gun battle with Salisbury police in 1930. Wood, a car thief, robber, and bootlegger, was famous for his prison escapes despite the disabilities of a missing hand and bad leg.

Veteran actor Nat Padgett returns for the fifth season of the play as Wood. The show is directed by Heather Dean.

Music, as always, plays a key role in the outdoor drama. The Traphill-based group, Crabgrass will perform music for the 2015 season of the show. Each night’s mini concerts start at 7:30 p.m., and runs until 8 p.m., when the play begins. The group will also perform between scenes and during intermission. The group includes Sheila Sidden, Chris Eller, Ronnie Richardson, Gary Jolly, Donnie Darnell, Sydney McGrady and Tony Johnson.

As for the stage play, the cast includes: Wes Martin, Matthew Owens, Danielle Barlow, Sheba Harris, Dub Harris, Matthew Owens, Jasmine Isaacs, Kaylee Simmons, Amanda Osborne, Kierston Mayberry, Gunnar Hunsberger, Francisco Dela-Cruz Hernandez, Jared Shumate, Matthew Cleary, Kumari Randleman, Morrigan Rathey, Travis Collins, Ken Welborn, Isaac Shumate, Martin Olivares and Adam Pruitt.

Otto Wood: The Bandit is a family-friendly show. No alcohol is allowed on the premises.

There is a large audience shelter, complete with fans, at The Record Park for visitors’ comfort.

Their driving string band sound, which draws heavily from the old-time jazz of New Orleans, proves a lively vehicle for original material, and a rich base for the gumbo of choice ethnic and folk flavors that come together in one delicious danceable sound. The music is fresh, homegrown, and high quality, which makes the band popular with craft breweries, farmer’s markets, festivals and venues whose vitality comes from the support of the community. Their spirit is hearty, and so is their belief in working (and playing!) hard, performing 150-200 shows a year from the FL Panhandle to New Orleans, Austin, Colorado, California, and beyond.

Saturday July 4
8pm-Closing Live Music: The Klee and Mike Show. The Klee & Mike Show is an acoustic duo featuring Klee Liles on guitar and vocals and Michael Robertson on percussion and vocals. 6pm-8pm Family Night Live Music: The Honey Chasers. The Honey Chasers features Cameron Owens (mandolinist/vocalist) original material, performed in a quartet style featuring Fiddle, Guitar, and upright bass. Meade Richter (world champion master fiddler) also highlights the 5 string electric fiddle in The Honey Chasers. Jeff Ingersoll (guitar/vocal harmony), former guitar player for progressive bluegrass projects such as Sons of Bluegrass and The Ingersoll Brothers, brings flavors of traditional string jazz to The Honey Chasers’ unique sound. Karl Zerfas (bass/harmony singing) has studied a wide variety of genres including Celtic, jazz, bluegrass, and old time music. With this interesting blend of influences and original musical ideas we’ve decided to classify our music as Progressive Bluegrass.
