4) Community Conversations: Justice for All on Saturday

This year’s theme for Elkland Art Center’s Liberty Parade is “Justice for All.” Elkland and The Blackburn House have been hosting monthly conversations exploring issues of justice. Experiences shared in these community conversations will be incorporated into the parade.

On June 20 at 2 p.m., we will host the third and final Community Conversation, “Justice for All.”

Many Americans learned the Pledge of Allegiance in elementary school, pronouncing a country dedicated to “Liberty and Justice for All.” What does that mean? Using a tool called Nonviolent Communication, facilitated by Susan Schaller, we will explore this topic.

Please join us this Saturday at Blackburn’s Chapel, 3986 Todd Railroad Grade Road in Todd.

5) In/Visible Theatre Productions of Without Words

Language connects us. We use words to ask, express love, argue, and to take our place in human society. And experts say if we don’t learn language as children, we can’t learn it at all.

In/Visible Theatre has a very special show coming up this summer called Without Words.  Based on the memoir, A Man Without Words, this true story focuses on Ildefonso, a 27-year old Mexican Indian, who was born deaf, never learned sign language, and lived on the fringes of human interaction. Susan, a sign language interpreter, defied experts in her determination to help him communicate. With characteristic In/Visible Theatre style, we use movement, drama, sound and silence to show how language is much more than words.  It is the gift of identity, culture, and community.

Join us for this remarkable bi-lingual theatrical event.  With a cast of Deaf, hearing, and hard-of-hearing actors, the entire show will be both spoken and in American Sign Language.

See Without Words during an Appalachian Summer Festival at ASU’s Valborg Theatre at 8 p.m. on July 24-25. Call 828-262-4046 for tickets.
