1) Fundraiser to Support Newland Fourth of July Festivities on May 30

Your Greater Newland Business Association is turning up the volume on our community Fourth of July celebration this year. Along with our downtown parade at noon, there will be extra fun activities for the kids, new vendors, live local entertainment and music, an arts festival and much more.

The parade lineup is at a11 a.m. at the town square and the parade will run to the Riverwalk Park, where all other events will happen. Entertainment and more immediately follows the parade all along the Riverwalk Park.

On Saturday, May 30, NBA members and volunteers will convene at the traffic light intersection at Sandy’s and CVS in downtown Newland, and at the Linville Post Office (N.C. 105/U.S. 221 intersection) for the Traffic Stop fundraiser.

All donations collected will support the NBA’s family-fun Fourth of July festivities.

If you would like to be a part of our celebration as a vender, an entertainer, an arts exhibitor and/or to become a part of our NBA team, contact us right away.

For general events information, call Veronica Strong at 828-719-1620.

2) June Programs at Elk Knob State Park

Trail Work Days: Every Saturday beginning April 4 and running through the middle of November (except June 27 and September 12), staff and volunteers will meet at the Summit Trailhead at 9 a.m. and work until approximately 3 p.m., weather permitting. Tools are provided, but volunteers should wear close-toed shoes and bring work gloves, lunch and water. Most of the time will be spent on repair work on the Summit Trail or completing the Maple Run Trail. If you would like to be involved in a fulfilling project that will fill you with a well-deserved sense of pride, then join us on Saturdays at Elk Knob State Park. For more information,  call 828-297-7261.

From Caterpillar to Butterfly: What kind of butterflies can you find at Elk Knob State Park? On Sunday, June 14 at 2 p.m., we will discuss the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly and view some pictures, through PowerPoint, of the butterflies and caterpillars that call this park home. We will discuss the anatomy of the insects and, if weather allows, we will venture out after the presentation and see what we can find. This program will be held rain or shine. Please meet at the park office.

Salamanders: Join a Park Ranger on Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a PowerPoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park. Afterwards we will see if we can find any out in the park. Meet at the Elk Knob State Park Office.

Great American Backyard Campout: Novice campers are invited to join the Rangers at Elk Knob State Park for an enjoyable night of camping on Saturday, June 27 beginning no earlier than 3 p.m. This is the seventh year that Elk Knob has participated in the campout which introduces families to the joy of camping without the expense of buying equipment. It is a great event for two main reasons: it allows participants a night of supervised camping at Elk Knob State Park, and we provide the tents, dinner, s’mores and interesting programs to fill the night with entertainment. Participants should bring their own snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, breakfast for Sunday morning, and their own sleeping bags or blankets. The campout is free but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED by June 22. You may register by calling 828-297-7261. Space is limited to the first 7 families who have never camped before. Adults must accompany children. Children must be 6 years and older. Pets are not allowed. Don’t miss a great opportunity to try camping without the expense involved. It may be the start of a new hobby for the family.
