North Carolina Native Plant Society Monthly Meeting, 9/13

It’s that time for our monthly meeting to be held on Wednesday September 13(Second Wednesday) at the Holiday Inn Express, 1943 Blowing Rock Road in Boone. The meeting room will open at 6:30 and we’ll start the meeting at 7:00.

Our program this month will be our own Bob Oelberg and Katherine Shoffner presenting  “Native Grasses, Sedges and Rushes in the Landscape”

Following an introduction to grass-like plants, we’ll talk about how they can be used in the landscape. We’ll review the benefits of using native grass-like plants in particular. Then, we’ll present grasses and sedges in gallon containers that we’ve raised from plugs since May, along with numerous photos.
Katherine Shoffner is a retired occupational therapist who has completed the master gardener course and participates in local master gardener projects. Bob Oelberg is a landscape architect designing high country landscapes with mostly native plants.

Vendors Wanted for Local Tractor Supply Farmers’ Market

Boone, NC – The Tractor Supply store in Boone is looking for farmers, crafters and artisans to sell their homemade and homegrown goods at its Farmers Market on October 7.

Tractor Supply is encouraging crafters and growers with an interest in everything from homemade crafts and candles to baked goods, art and gardening to sign up. To register, vendors can visit TSCEventPartners.com or the Boone store. Nonprofit organizations and food trucks are also welcome to register.

“The Farmers Market will be a celebration of the talent and expertise in our community,” said Phil Reiter, vice president of national and local store marketing at Tractor Supply.

By registering, participants will have the opportunity to showcase and sell their goods and services, free of charge, in tented areas near the storefront.

“Whether it’s a side business or a hobby, our customers take pride in what they build, create and grow, and we want to help them share their talents with the community,” said Reiter. “At Tractor Supply, service means more than helping customers save time and money, it means serving our community and supporting our customers’ passions.”

Lees-McRae Alumna and Hall of Fame Inductee to Speak at Convocation, 9/14

BANNER ELK, N.C. —Ally Murphy ’10, founder of Ally’s Bar and Lees-McRae Athletics hall of fame inductee, will be this year’s Convocation speaker, giving a speech titled “Dream Big”, during the annual college-wide event on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 4:00 p.m. in Hayes Auditorium.

Before starting her cycling career at Lees-McRae in 2008, Murphy–then Ally Stacher–was a student-athlete on the women’s wrestling team at Lassen College in Susanville, California.

Murphy quickly found a home on the bicycle, moving up the ranks in the world of women’s cycling. She joined the U.S. National team in 2009 and accelerated through the sport, becoming a member of one of the top teams in the world by 2011 for four years. During those four years, Murphy was a part of many victories individually and with a team across the globe.

During her time at Lees-McRae, Murphy was honored with the “Carla Swart Sportsmanship Award,” which was presented to the female rider who sacrificed their own chances at victory for the good of their team.

In 2015, she was inducted in to the Fred I. Dickerson Hall of Fame for her impressive accomplishments both during her time on the Lees-McRae Cycling Team and in the elite and professional cycling ranks.

Murphy recently found success in her creation of Ally’s Bar, a whole-ingredient energy bar for cyclists and athletes alike.

With a shift in careers, Murphy is channeling all her efforts in creating a nationally recognized snack brand.
