Ranger led tours of the second floor of the former home of Moses and Bertha Cone.  Tour is approximately 45 minutes long and reservations are required. To reserve a tour: call 828-295-3782 or sign up at the NPS information desk at the Manor House.  Reservations are accepted beginning at 10:00am Friday for the upcoming weekend only.  No advance reservations, please.

Caldwell Arts Council Presents 32nd Annual Sculpture Celebration, 9/9

Lenoir, N.C. – Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, N.C. announces the 32nd Annual Sculpture Celebration to be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Broyhill Walking Park, 945 Lakewood Circle in Lenoir NC. This event is free to the public, and shuttles will run throughout the day between the park and area parking. Awards will be announced at about 3:30p.m.

The Celebration will feature sculptural artwork by artists from across the eastern United States who will compete for cash prizes totaling $11,000.00.

Realistic and abstract, traditional and contemporary, movable and stationary, indoor and outdoor – sculptures of all types will be on display and for sale.  The juror for this year’s event is Dan Price, Chair and Associate Professor of Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois.

Lenoir’s Annual Sculpture Celebration is recognized as the longest-running sculpture competition in the Southeast and a driving force in the area’s sculptor-friendly environment. The event attracts artists, sculpture buyers, and visitors from across the United States.

Food vendors, children’s art activities, and live music will be featured throughout the day

Sculptors Welcome Dinner Friday, September 8, 2017

Many sculptors arrive early to install larger sculptures and to pick the best spot for their artwork. A buffet dinner will be held to welcome them and to introduce the judge and sponsors of the event on Friday, September 8 beginning at 7pm in the parking area of the Broyhill Family Foundation near the entrance of the Broyhill Walking Park.  Join us to welcome these sculptors – tickets are $20 in advance or $25 on-site. 

Lenoir, North Carolina is located in Caldwell County in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, off Hwy 321 between Hickory and the Blowing Rock / Boone area.

Watauga County Public Library Hosts Immigration Workshop, 9/8

The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite local area service providers as well as any persons interested in the Immigration process to join Daniel Knutsen, a Community Relations Officer for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for a presentation giving an overview of the process for becoming a United States citizen on Friday, September 8th from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm.

Handouts detailing the process as well as test preparation materials will be available for free.

Tony Crawford will walk you through about 40 of their most important features and capabilities, so bring your fully charged iPhone and/or iPad and click along.

Book Signing and Reading Event at Ashe County Arts Council, 9/7

Contributors to The Love of Baseball take you out to the ballgame at a book signing and reading event at the Ashe County Arts Council on Thursday, September 7, from 5-7:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served and books will be available for sale.

Written by baseball fans for baseball fans (and those who love them), thirty writers have written about the highs and lows, early fan days, summer fun at the ballpark, and how they have come to love baseball and the role it has played over their lives. Fans of teams across the country contributed to the book. The book is published by McFarland and Company.

Reading from their work and signing books at the September 7 event will be Becky Stragand, Doug Butler, Julie Townsend, Ellyn Ritterskamp, and Henry Doss.  Co-Editor of The Love of Baseball, Chris Arvidson, will also read from her essay in the book.

 

Mediterranean Cooking Class Series: Med Instead of Meds for Better Health, Thursday Evenings 

Join this 3 class series offered by Watauga Cooperative Extension on Thursday evenings from 4 until 6:30pm to prepare foods that fit into the classic Mediterranean way of eating, and then enjoy dinner together.

Classes will be held at the Agricultural Conference Center, 252 Poplar Grove Rd, Boone on September 7th, 14th and 21st, 2017.

Eating like those who live in the Mediterranean region has been shown to promote health and decrease risk of many chronic diseases. Eating this way is not only healthy, it is delicious and satisfying. 

Class size is limited, so reserve your space by paying $45 for all three classes, including dinner, in advance at N.C. Cooperative Extension, 971 West King St., Boone. Check or cash only, with checks made payable to Watauga CES.
