Lees-McRae 4th Annual Friendship Luncheon and Silent Auction, 8/11

BANNER ELK, N.C. — The New Opportunity School for Women will hold its cornerstone fundraising event on Friday, August 11, during the fourth annual Friends Luncheon and Silent Auction starting at 11:30 a.m.at the Beech Mountain Club.

Since its establishment 12 years ago, the NOSW–a program designed to improve the educations, financial and person circumstances of low-income, middle-aged women in the Appalachian region–130 women have completed the intensive three-week residential program, with many continuing their education or using skills acquired during the program to find employment.

How many times have you walked passed something and not realized it was there until it was pointed out to you or it moved? Chances are pretty good this has happened to you and if so this program is for you. Join Ranger Sicard to celebrate “Grandparents Day” and learn the many ways animals use camouflage in the wild and also how to be more attentive when hiking out on the trails to notice more neat things than what is right on the trail.  This will be about a 30-minute program consisting of a presentation and an interactive part for attendees to try and locate several “staged” animals in the area around where the program is held.  To attend, meet at the Boone Fork Parking Area located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 299.9. Spiders of North Carolina

Celebrate State Parks “Year Of The Spider” by Joining Ranger Sicard for a PowerPoint presentation focused on the Spiders that can be found in North Carolina. This program will discuss the basic types of spiders and species that we have as well as some identifying markings on the spider.

Twilight Hike

Profile Trail parking lot

Join a park ranger to explore the lower Profile Trail in the twilight hours.  We’ll hope to see and hear nocturnal wildlife and enjoy the woods in that special time of the day.  We’ll walk approximately one mile, round trip.  Bring a flashlight or headlamp and dress for the weather.  Closed toes shoes are highly recommended.

Appropriate for ages 8 and up; children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.  Please no pets.

 

 

 

 

Clouds

Have you ever looked up at the clouds and formulated an image of something into them (for example you see the image of a dog when you look at the cloud)? Chances are you were looking at a cumulonimbus cloud. Join Ranger Sicard to learn how to identify cloud types and what kind of weather is associated with the each cloud. Participants have the option to make a cloud poster to take with them at the end of the presentation. This program will be held at Boone Fork Parking area at 2pm and will last approximately 30 minutes. If wanting to stay and make a cloud poster plan to stay an additional 20 minutes after the presentation. If it is raining the program will be held at the park office 9872 Hwy 105 S. Edible and Medicinal Plants

The wilds of the Southern Appalachians can be a useful to those knowledgeable in woodcraft and a curse to those who consume a misidentified plant.  Join a Ranger for a stroll through the woods and learn some science and folklore behind our botanical bounty.  We will not be collecting or consuming plants during this program.  Please dress for current weather conditions and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

Appropriate for all ages (Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Please leave pets at home.

 

 

 

Mountain Stream Ecology

Boone Fork Parking Area, Blue Ridge Parkway

Join a Park Ranger to learn about how the living and non-living things interact in mountain streams. What are all of those bugs and other critters swimming and crawling through the creek? We will catch and identify what type of creature they are and what these species could tell us about water quality. Nets will be provided. Any participants wanting to get into the stream should bring waders or clothes that can get wet and a towel to dry off.  Boone Fork Parking Lot is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway; just north of mile marker 300.

Appropriate for all ages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets please.  

 

Watauga County Public Library Presents Author Visit, 8/11

The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite you to join local author Jasmine Schools for a book signing and informal talk about her Young Adult novel, “A State of Gray” on Friday, August 11th from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM.

Watauga County Public Library Presents Understanding Your Credit, 8/9

The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite you to join us for another installment in a series of Financial Literacy Workshops for teens and adults on Wednesday, August 9th from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm in the Meeting Room at the Watauga County Public Library, 140 Queen St., Boone, NC 28607.

Presenter: Bryan Bouboulis, Professor, Walker College of Business at Appalachian State University.

This workshop will be on credit. Specifically, we will focus on credit basics such as what a credit score is and how to get yours as well as what a credit report tells landlords and employers.
