Author Visit by Jerry Shinn at Watauga County Public Library, June 10

The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite you to join Jerry Shinn, author of “A Voice of His Time,” for a presentation on Saturday, June 10th at 2:00 pm.
Jerry Shinn grew up in South Carolina, graduated with Honors in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and is a former associate editor, editorial page editor and award-winning columnist for the Charlotte Observer. He now lives and writes fiction, poetry, history, biography, commentary and music in the North Carolina mountains.
“A Voice of His Time” is the long past due biography of Charles H. Crutchfield, a man hailed as “the pioneer of commercial broadcasting.” Son of a cotton broker, born in Hope, Arkansas and educated in Spartanburg, South Carolina, Crutchfield quickly rose to prominence in the rapidly growing industry of radio and television. His story is told by former reporter Jerry Shinn, no stranger to the important figures who shaped Charlotte, North Carolina, city of the New South.

Ranger led tours of the second floor of the former home of Moses and Bertha Cone. Tour is approximately 45 minutes long and reservations are required. To reserve a tour: call 828-295-3782 or sign up at the NPS information desk at the Manor House. Reservations are accepted beginning at 10:00am Friday for the upcoming weekend only. No advance reservations, please.
1:00-3:00 – Informal Upstairs Tour at Cone Manor
From 1:00 to 3:00, the second floor of Cone Manor will be open for a do-it-yourself tour. Rangers will be on hand to answer questions.

Sunday, June 4, St. John’s Episcopal Church presents the vocal and hand bell choirs of.Holy Cross Episcopal Church, joined by special guests, Banner Elk Presbyterian church Choir, and jazz musicians Scott Kallestad and Keith McCutchen for an old time gospel sing as well as many special selections. The concert is at 5:00 pm, followed by a pot luck supper on the lawn. St. John’s is located on Herb Thomas Road in Valle Crucis. Admission $5.00, for more information call 828-963-4609
