Willard Gayheart Exhibits at the Jones House Through May
Often referred to as the “Norman Rockwell of Appalachia,” Willard Gayheart specializes in pencil drawings of the people, culture, and history of the Appalachian region. A self-taught artist, songwriter, and musician, Gayheart is most well-known for his portrayals of Appalachian music legends, including several of Doc and Merle Watson. Through his depictions of scenes like Doc Watson’s baptism and Janette Carter, of the famed Carter Family, playing the dulcimer, Gayheart brings to life the spirit and resilience of Appalachia.
Born in 1932 in Cordia, Kentucky, Gayheart attended Berea College where he was encouraged by a teacher to be himself and be proud of his mountain roots. Gayheart continues to follow this advice today, and it comes through in his artwork and his music.
“Willard’s artwork is at once recognizable and familiar,” says Town of Boone’s Cultural Resources Coordinator, Mark Freed. “People all over the region and country have Gayheart prints of friends, family, and musical heroes.” One of his drawings includes signatures of dozens of people who own Wayne Henderson instruments. Another depicts a montage of musicians who have been featured on the Songs of the Mountain program.
Throughout the month of May, framed prints of Gayheart’s work will be on display and for sale at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center’s Mazie Jones Gallery in downtown Boone. The framed prints will range in price from $225, for an original framed work, and $80. Select unframed prints will also be available for $15 to $35. To learn more about Gayheart and his work, please visit his art gallery and frame shop, the “Front Porch Gallery & Frame Shop,” in Woodlawn, Virginia.

Watauga County Volunteer Receives Girl Scout Award
(Colfax, NC – May 15, 2017) – Volunteers are the heart of the Girl Scout organization and every year, Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont (GSCP2P) honors those exceptional volunteers who have gone above and beyond- in time, skills and responsibilities.
Amber Mellon of Boone was recently honored during the annual adult awards ceremony as part of the 2017 GSCP2P Annual Meeting in Statesville. Mellon received the Honor Award, which recognizes a registered Girl Scout adult who has delivered outstanding service and contributes to the achievement of the council’s goals in two or more geographic areas. Mellon is a troop leader, communications specialist and adult recognition specialist for Region 6 and has served on the task force. She assists the membership staff and service unit with recruitment events and is always promoting the cookie program and other activities in the community. By developing connections with local news publications and radio and television stations, she has increased the visibility of Girl Scouts in her area. She also developed a systematic process for encouraging volunteers and parents to nominate leaders for service unit and council awards, and has increased Region 6 council awards by 76 percent.
“Every volunteer helps create memorable and exceptional experiences for our girls,” said GSCP2P CEO Lane Cook. “Whether it’s leading a troop every week, exploring nature at camp, facilitating a LEGO robotics workshop or planning trips so girls can experience new things, our volunteers serve as positive role models every day.”
