Mark Reed Named as Lees-McRae College Commencement Ceremony Speaker, May 6

BANNER ELK, N.C. — Mark Reed, a nationally ranked private school leader and trustee for several regional and domestic boards, will speak during the spring Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 6. During that time, he will also receive an Honorary Doctorate of Education.

A native of Montana, Reed received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in education administration and independent school leadership from Columbia University.

He currently serves as head of school at Charlotte Country Day School and on several board of trustee committees including: Teachers Fellowship Institute (TFI), Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS), Foundation for the Carolinas, and Carolinas HealthCare System. He is a field professor and serves on the Board of Advisors for the Klingenstein Center, Columbia University, as well as the Board of Advisors for Carney, Sandoe & Associates.

During his tenure at Charlotte Country Day School, Reed has enhanced campus safety, developed a multiyear Strategic Plan, increased endowment to $54 million, hosted several public art exhibits, improved athletic fields and campus aesthetics, and established an all-school convocation, Parent Speaker Series, and Science Outreach Program. In fall 2014, he was elected into the Headmasters Association, a highly selective professional organization comprised of the top-100 private school leaders.

In addition to his accomplishments in education, from 1986 until 1993, Reed performed as a world-class high jumper competing in the international track and field circuit.

Tractor Supply Co. to Host Backyard Poultry Event, Apr. 8

Boone, NC  – The birds are back in town! That’s right; the Tractor Supply Co. store in Boone will host a backyard poultry event on Apr 08, 2017 from 8:00am until 12:00pm

During the event, customers will have the opportunity to engage in a number of activities all centered around learning how to care for and manage an at-home flock.

“The popularity of raising backyard poultry has continued to grow year after year and it has a lot to do with the convenience of getting fresh eggs right from your own backyard,” said Christy Owens, manager of the Boone Tractor Supply store. “Our goal is to ensure that anyone who’s interested in raising a backyard flock has the resources and information needed to do so.” 

Customers will also have the opportunity to enjoy games.

Ashe County Arts Council sponsors the Rave On: The Buddy Holly Experience on Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 pm at the Ashe Civic Center. This performance re-invents the ordinary tribute show with an electrifying, high-energy, rock and roll extravaganza featuring American’s premier Buddy Holly interpreter, Billy McGuigan. He captures the essence of Buddy Holly and presents his music in a way that is new and fresh.
