Nature Photography Weekend Registration Opens at Grandfather Mountain, Apr. 3

Online registration begins Monday, April 3, for Grandfather Mountain’s annual Nature Photography Weekend, an exciting workshop for photographers planned for June 2 to 4.

The event features presentations from renowned photographers, spectacular shooting opportunities on the mountain and a friendly but competitive photo contest.

The featured presenters for 2017, including Charles Glatzer, David Marx, Mary Presson Roberts and Kendall Chiles, hail from throughout the region and across the country and will speak on a variety of photography topics encompassing both the technical and artistic elements of the craft.

Presentations take place in the afternoons and evenings, allowing participants to explore Grandfather Mountain and take their own shots during the day, while also participating in several outdoor field sessions (weather permitting) with professional photographers. Opportunities for sunrise and sunset photography also will be offered.

Participants are invited to camp free at the Woods Walk Picnic Area during the weekend, taking advantage of one of the few opportunities to stay overnight inside the park.

Admission to Nature Photography Weekend is $115 and covers three-day park admission, a Saturday evening meal, entry to all presentations and field sessions and a flash drive for submitting contest entries. A $95 level includes all of the above, but does not include participation in the photo contest (or the flash drive).

Family members and guests of participants may visit the mountain at a discounted rate during the weekend if registered in advance.

Online registration begins at 8 a.m. Monday, April 3, at www.grandfather.com. Photographers should act fast — the event usually fills within a matter of days.

Writer, Editor, Musician, Teacher – Katerina Whitley to Speak at High Country Writers, Apr. 13

Katerina Whitley will be the featured presenter at the Thursday, April 13 meeting of the High Country Writers at the Watauga Public Library in Boone. The Library is located at 140 Queen Street. The program will begin at 10:00am, preceded by coffee and conversation from 9:30-10:00am. The program is free and open to the public.

Katerina was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and immigrated to this country at the age of 16. She studied at a prestigious school in Thessaloniki where she learned English and an appreciation for what was good in the American culture. She received a scholarship to Mars Hill College where she studied music. She finished her English studies at Furman University, followed by theological studies at seminary. Katerina’s professional career included a 20 year stint as a church journalist, an assignment that took her to many parts of the world. She has written and published seven books to date in which she combines her love of theology, drama and story-telling. Her most recent book, a novel, is titled A New Love. She will speak about the art of writing first as listening, then as imagining before and during the act of putting words on paper. She will also address the importance of rhythm in writing, dramatic monologues and the extremely critical meaning of context. Katerina will have several of her books for sale following her presentation. This woman is a real treasure…you’ll not want to miss this program.

High Country Writers has been “energizing writers since 1995!” Regular meetings are at the Watauga Public Library on the second and fourth Thursdays of most months from ten until noon and speakers’ programs are co-sponsored with the Library. HCW members present writing skills workshops on the first Thursday of the month and have recently partnered with the Watauga Arts Council in hosting these workshops. In the event of inclement weather which dictates the closure of the Library, the High Country Writers Program will be canceled. For more information and a current calendar, visit the website: http:/highcountrywriterstripod.com/. Guests are welcome.
