Brothers Like These – A Staged Reading of Writing by Vietnam Veterans

The Appalachian Veterans Arts & Humanities Collective at Appalachian State University is pleased to announce its next event: a staged reading of Brothers Like These, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 7:30 pm in Parkway Ballroom, Plemmons Student Union. There is no charge for admission and the community is invited.

Brothers Like These is comprised of stories and poems, written by Vietnam combat veterans in Classroom B, an out of the way room in the basement of the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, where they gathered to write every Wednesday for nearly two years.

Brothers Like These – a staged reading of those veteran authors reading their own work  – weaves the remarkable voices of unimaginably brave soldiers who gave their all during the Vietnam War. It’s an enduring testimony to their shared sacred sense of community, love, and brotherhood. These are stories and poems, large and small, funny and heartbreaking, that only these men can relate in their own inimitable styles —stories and poems not just invaluable to succeeding generations of soldiers, but to every citizen of our country, and beyond.

Brothers Like These premiered on August 31, 2016, at the Asheville Community Theater to a packed house. The Appalachian Veterans Arts & Humanities Collective is honored to host its reprise as well as its authors and their families.

The book, Brothers Like These, forthcoming from St. Andrews University Press, will be on sale after the Appalachian State performance. Bruce Weigl, Vietnam veteran and finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, had the following to say about Brothers Like These: “What a remarkable collection of souls are represented in this collection, and not just the souls of these brave men who fought a jungle war no one wanted to remember and then somehow made their way to poetry … It is the lyric beauty of these stories and poems that engages us as readers, but it is the depth of the experience that most singularly distinguishes this work, for which I am grateful.”
