Downtown Boone Easter EGG-Stravaganza Taking Place on Sat., Apr. 8
The Downtown Boone Development Association (DBDA), the Jones House Cultural and Community Center, and the Watauga County Public Library are delighted to announce the 16th annual downtown Boone Easter Egg-stravaganza. This year’s Egg-stravaganza will take place on Saturday, April 8 starting at the Watauga County Public Library at 2:00 p.m. with entertainment and arts & crafts. The Easter Bunny and Mayor Brantz will lead an Easter “parade” to the Jones House just before 2:30 p.m.
Activities at the Jones House will include Easter egg hunts, games, and activities for all ages. Easter egg hunts will be divided into three age groups; 0 – 3 years old, 4 – 6 years old, and 7 – up with each group having multiple chances of finding a golden egg which children may redeem for an Easter basket prize.
During the Easter egg hunts, visit with special guests, such as Twist the Balloon Man, representatives from the Children’s Council, and other surprise guests. Enjoy games with prizes, give-a-ways, and more until 4:00 pm at the Jones House.
Parking enforcement in downtown will stop at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, to assist with activities at the Watauga County Public Library and the Jones House Cultural and Community Center.

Watauga County Humane Society Pet Adoptions at Tractor Supply Co. on Saturday
The Tractor Supply Company store in Boone at 2221 Old 421 S will host a pet adoption event on Saturday, March 25, 2017 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.
Families looking to add a pet to their home are encouraged to stop by the store and interact with the dogs and cats that are available for adoption. Participating adoption groups include:

- On site 1:00pm to 3:00pm
“Pet adoption days are exciting at Tractor Supply,” said Christy Owens, manager of the Boone Tractor Supply store. “Not only do we get to help families take home a great pet, but we also get to support our community adoption partners who are working hard to care for homeless dogs and cats.”

The Walker Center Presents American Idol Winner Taylor Hicks on Thurs., Apr. 6
The Walker Center, on the campus of Wilkes Community College, will present Taylor Hicks onThursday, April 6, 2017. Hicks is one of the most beloved and popular “American Idol” winners of all time. This performance is sponsored by Wells Fargo.
From the start, Hicks’ material on the mega-hit show set him apart, with a unique take on Southern soul, R&B, country, and blues. His fans cast 64 million votes, and nearly 37 million American viewers and more than 200 million viewers worldwide tuned in to crown Hicks the Season 5 winner of “American Idol.”
Less than three weeks later, his debut single, “Do I Make You Proud,” entered at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Pop 100, and Single Sales Charts. Coinciding with the single’s release, a cover story named him People magazine’s “Hottest Bachelor of the Year.” His self-titled album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and was quickly certified RIAA Platinum. Hicks is the first male Idol winner to be featured on a Grammy Award-winning album, Jimmy Fallon’s “Blow Your Pants Off,” which took home the 2013 Grammy for Best Comedy Album.
On Broadway, Hicks starred in the hit musical “Grease” as Teen Angel, and when asked to join the national tour, happily agreed.

Appalachian Opera Theatre to Present “The Magic Flute” on Apr. 6-9
“The Magic Flute” has captivated audiences around the world many times since its 1791 premiere in Vienna. Appalachian Opera Theatre’s coming production of Wolfgang Mozart’s beloved opera aims to build on that success in variety of ways.

ASU’s College of Arts and Sciences Hosts Dr. Anthony Aveni on Mon., Mar. 27
On Monday, March 27, Appalachian State University’s College of Arts and Sciences will host Dr. Anthony Aveni, a Russell Colgate Distinguished University Professor, in its seventh annual Dean’s Advisory Council’s Interdisciplinary Lecture series. On the cusp of America’s first coast-to-coast total eclipse of the sun in 99 years, Aveni, author of “In the Shadow of the Moon: The Culture and Science behind the Magic, Mystery, and Fear of Eclipses,” and a witness to eight such events, explores the history and culture surrounding solar eclipses from Babylon to the ancient Maya, telling stories of the different kinds of impact nature’s most dazzling phenomenon had on humanity. The lecture will take place in the I.G. Greer Auditorium at 7 p.m., followed by a book signing.
On Tuesday, March 28, a panel discussion titled “Dark Skies: Celestial Events and Humanity” on the links between astronomy, religion and anthropology will be held at 2 p.m. in the Rough Ridge Room of Appalachian’s Plemmons Student Union. The event will feature Aveni and the following Appalachian faculty: Professor Daniel Caton, Physics and Astronomy, Dr. Laura Ammon, Philosophy and Religion, Dr. Cheryl P. Claassen, Anthropology, and moderated by Dr. Timothy Smith, Anthropology.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Cambodian Labor Organizer and Delegate to U.N. Conference on the Status of Women to Speak at ASU, Mar. 30
Sophorn Yang, president of the Cambodian Alliance of Trade Unions (CATU) and a delegate to the United Nations Conference on the Status of Women, will speak at Appalachian State University on Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. The presentation will be in the Gordon Gathering Hall, Room 124, in the Reich College of Education building. The event is free and open to the public.
