HERBalachia Herbal School Celebrates Regional Tradition in March

A brand new herbalist training school will open in East Tennessee in March 2017. The Herbalist Lifestyle Program is suited for beginners, health care providers with an interest in broadening their approach, gardeners and growers, and anyone interested in a healthier, more natural lifestyle. The school faculty is comprised of the area’s most knowledgeable and experienced herbalists, and each instructor teaches their specialty. Michelle Bouton, creator of the HERBalachia school holds a Masters degree in Acupuncture and Herbalism and practices at Appalachian Acupuncture in Johnson City. The Lifestyle Program is prerequisite for a more in- depth program, the Community Clinical Herbalist program, slated to begin in the spring of 2018.

Though there will be some readings and written assignments, HERBalachia’s Herbalist Lifestyle Program is designed to be highly interactive. “It’s definitely hands-on,” says Bouton, “which is the very best way to get to know the plants. We will go to the woods to dig up roots, taste medicinal teas, and cook salves. Hands-on learning allows us to access a deeper type of wisdom.”

The primary focus of HERBalachia is on usage and conservation of plants that grow in the Appalachian region. The

Materia Medica of 40 local medicinal herbs to be studied has been

carefully selected for usefulness, safety, and ease of identification. Students will learn to grow

and forage these herbs, completing the program with a small apothecary of preparations in

many forms: salves, tinctures, syrups, and more.

Field trips will include visits to the

Cherokee

National Forest, the Nolichucky River, an Appalachian species propagation garden, and a

Chinese herbal apothecary, among other sites. Topics will include responsible foraging,

stewardship of at-risk species, propagation and harvesting techniques, herbal energetics, and

introductions to other herbal traditions (Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and Native

American). Classes will meet for 7 weekend-long modules, 15 hours per weekend. Each module

will balance fieldwork, herbal preparations, lecture, and student projects.

“There is a great interest in our community for this information,” says Bouton. “The school will

help connect herbalists, growers, educators, and those who want to use natural remedies safely

at home. I love the idea that we are carrying on the practices of our people- our ancestors- who

lived off the land and learned healing techniques using available plants. It’s up to us to preserve

this knowledge and to protect the plants so that they are still around in 100 years; we really are

the future of traditions. One of the most exciting things for me about creating the school is the

great interest right out of the gate. Our first group of 15 students filledin 2 weeks, so I created a

second group of 15, and only 6 spaces are still available in that group. Almost half of the

students who have signed up are licensed health care professionals, which denotes both

interest and confidence in herbalism in our medical community.”

Influenced by artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Spoon, Phish, The Grateful Dead, and Buffalo Springfield, Robbie’s precise guitar playing, calming vocals, and use of his loop pedal brings a breath of fresh air to timeless classics and helps to define his own original music. A key component to Robbie’s solo playing is his loop pedal, which provides the listener with a “full band” sound that one would not expect from a guy on stage with a guitar.
