1) Weekly Events at Lost Province Brewing Co.

TUES. MAY 5: Cheap date night, dinner for two $25 from 6-10 p.m.

THURS. MAY 7: $3 Thursday, $3 pints on all LP brewed beers (except high gravity) with live music from Out of the Blue from 8-10 p.m. Out of the Blue is an acoustic trio based out of Boone made up of three multi-talented musicians/vocalists whose backgrounds and experience blend together to create a crowd pleasing mix of music from classic to modern country, bluegrass to southern rock. Strong male and female lead and tight harmony vocals make Out of the Blue a sought after group and a favorite wherever they perform. Lee Hodges- guitar, lead and harmony vocals; Kelly Wiley- guitar, lead and harmony vocals; Greg Russell- percussion, vocals.

FRI. MAY 8: Graduation Celebration, Freakin’ Ferkin Friday at Five continues with a Frekin of Peaches N’ Cream Ale featuring Councill’s Store Cream Ale. Live music from 6-8 p.m. featuring Trio du Cuig. They play traditional Irish music incorporating drums, guitar, flute and violin. Live music from 9 p.m. to closing from Danny Whittington and A Killa Band. Jonathan Priest, Mike Runyon and Douglas James join Danny for some tasty R&B and seriously groovin’ funk.

SAT. MAY 9: Now serving brunch at 10 a.m. Live music from Swing Guitars from 8 p.m. to closing. Boone’s own gypsy band Swing Guitars has been active for almost a decade performing acoustic hot club-style jazz in area restaurants, music festivals and civic concert series. Playing a mix of gypsy jazz standards, swing classics, originals and modern jazz tunes, the acoustic group focuses on the music of Django Reinhardt and other early jazz pioneers. Guitarists Andy Page, Jim Schaller and Jay Brown, along with Ben McPherron on bass, are experienced musicians widely-known to High Country music fans. An evening with Swing Guitars promises a variety of sounds perfect for socializing, eating, drinking and dancing.

SUN. MAY 10: Mother’s Day. Brunch at 10 a.m. Lost Province Sunday: residents of “the lost province” (Watauga, Ashe, Avery and Alleghany) receive 10 percent off food with verification of residency.

2) Happy Trails Cowboy Church to Host Family Fun Horse Show on Saturday.

Enjoy the outdoors this weekend at the Family Fun Horse Show sponsored by Happy Trails Cowboy Church of Ashe on Saturday, May 9 at Baker Farm, 3460 Dick Phillips Road in West Jefferson. The horse show will feature fun games, classes for traditional and racking horses and events for riders and non-riders of all ages.CowboyChurch - RCCR-6

Some of the planned events are Barrel racing, Texas barrels, Pole Bending, Egg Race, Ride a “Buck” and much more. There is a $10 entry fee for speed events, with a 50 percent payback for winners and $5 for each non-speed event. There will be fun and games for kids with horses or without. One of the show highlights will be a mounted shooting demonstration by crack rider, Danny Lambert of Burnt Hill Stables.

The Cowboy Church is known for its events such as the Annual Wagon Train Revival and Ride, the Rough Cut Cowboy Race and the dozens of horses featured in the West Jefferson Christmas Parade each year.

Cowboy Church Pastor, Roger L. Blevins said, “We are pleased to have the opportunity to bring this event to our community. Even if you aren’t a “horse person” you can enjoy the atmosphere. There will be lots of fun and games for those who don’t ride also. It’s great for the whole family!” There will be concessions available, so bring your lawn chairs and come watch!

3) Wildflower Walk at Grandfather Mountain State Park

TUES. MAY 5: Spring wildflower walk, 5 p.m. at the Profile Parking Lot (N.C. Highway 105 South, half mile north of the Highway 184 intersection). The High Country produces spectacular spring wildflowers. Join a park ranger in weekly explorations to see what new spring flowers have emerged. Hikes are conducted at a slow pace on moderately strenuous trails and last 2 and a half hours. Wear sturdy hiking boots. Bring a jacket, water and snacks. All ages welcome: participants under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. 4) Genealogy Presentation to be Held at Public Library on Tuesday

Join family history researcher Terry Reigel for a presentation on “Mining All the Census Data.” Reigel will present on using the data contained in the U.S. Census for finding more than names and ages of your ancestors. Free and open to the public at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 5 in the meeting room of the Watauga County Public Library.
