Winter Farmers Market to Return to Boone Saturday

Boone’s Winter Farmers Market Will return on Saturday December 3rd.   Several vendors from last year will be returning and a few new ones.  We are especially excited about a new produce vendor who has a heated greenhouse and is expecting ripe tomatoes by  December 17th.

Patrons will find farm fresh greens, onions, eggs as well as fruit and winter storage crops like potatoes,  sweet potatoes,  pumpkins,  squash and apples among the offerings.

For the sweet tooth – honey, baked goods,including gluetin free cookies,  jams and jellies will be available.  

Local farm raised beef, lamb and poultry will grace the market and a few quality crafters will be on hand.
The market is held indoor the first and third Saturdays from 9am to noon , December through April at the Agriculture Conference Center at 252 Poplar Grove Rd in Boone.

Early 20th Century

Author Christine Simolke will share her research into her Italian immigrant
roots and the immigrant experience in early 20th century America.
Her newly-released novel “Children of Italy” was inspired by her
grandmother’s stories of her voyage to America and early life in the United
States.
Ms. Simolke will cover a number of topics including the historical
background of late 19th century / early 20th century Italy and the
significance of the events that occurred leading up to the mass immigration
of Italians to other lands, as well as Italian-American stereotypes — Fact
& Fiction, including food, religion, the Mafia, the Black Hand and
Anarchism.
Christine will have her novel, “Children of Italy”, available for sale and
signing.

Tree Lighting at Cancer Center Dec. 15

Boone, NC (December 1, 2016) – The Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer Center’s 3rdannual Lighting of the Tree Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, December 15th from 6 – 7 pm in Watauga Medical Center’s auditorium atrium located at 336 Deerfield Road, Boone, NC. The Lighting of the Tree Ceremony is free and open to the public to honor and/or remember loved ones who have faced cancer, no matter where they were treated.

 The ceremony will feature the lighting of the tree, refreshments, live music and an opportunity to fellowship with Cancer Center staff, neighbors and friends. In addition, participants may order commemorative porcelain ornaments in honor/or memory of a loved one who faced cancer that will be placed on the tree. A volunteer decorating committee will carefully hand-paint each honoree’s name onto their respective ornament. Orders received by December 12th will be placed on the tree prior to the ceremony. Orders placed after December 12th will be added as they are received. Ornament orders are by donation only and all donations will benefit the Cancer Resource Alliance (CRA). The Cancer Center’s CRA program is designed to help cancer survivors and their families find support during and after diagnosis and treatment.
 
The Lighting of the Tree Ceremony is open to people of all faiths. In addition to the ceremony tree located at Watauga Medical Center, the Cancer Center staff will also decorate a second tree in its first floor medical oncology lobby.
