Pinto Bean Supper Sept. 24 at Bethelview UMC

A Pinto Bean Supper will be held on Saturday, September 24, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bethelview United Methodist Church, located on Ridge Road just off Castle Ford Road in Boone.  The menu includes pinto beans, cornbread, slaw, variety of potatoes, variety of desserts and variety of beverages.  Take-outs will be available.  Donations for the supper will be accepted.  For more information or directions, call828/264-3390.

Saturday, Oct. 1, Wayne Henderson & Friends, sponsored by Farmers State Bank. Wayne Henderson’s top-notch finger-picking is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia. His guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, and in seven nations in Asia. Additionally, he is a regular at Heritage Hall because he is so talented and popular, a “good house” is always expected with ticket sales from all around the area. A Wayne show is always a “feel good” experience for everyone in the house. The stories, the music, the attitude all come together to create a dynamic ambience in which the audience and the talent are supporting one another.

Oct. 21,22, 28 & 29 – 7 pm; Oct. 29 – 3pm, JC Community Theatre’s Fall Production, A-Haunting We Will Go- a full-length mystery-comedy by Tim Kelly. Screams in the dark and galloping goose flesh!   Glamorous, young television producer Norma Corwin made a childhood vow that once in her life she would spend a night alone in The Inn of the Three Sisters, an eerie and forbidding hotel famous for an unresolved murder, horrifying spirit manifestations and murderous intrigue. When she learns the inn is to be dynamited to make way for a new highway, she decides the time is now (or never) and the fun begins. A strange assortment of uninvited “guests” arrive to add more mystery: ESP expert Madame Lugosi; a young serviceman who says he’s lost his way; a doomed young woman who comes to warn Norma that she’s in great danger; and the spirits of the three young sisters who, with the villainous handyman Flint, are cursed to relive the ghastly murder each night.

Heritage Hall is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving the Area with quality entertainment at affordable pricing. Scholars and Scones with Elizabeth Baird at BRAHM Thursday

Elizabeth Denton Baird, the Chief of School and Lifelong Education at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, will present a program about exploring the outdoors. The program will complement BRAHM’s exhibitionTime + Terrain, an outstanding collection of paintings by Elizabeth Bradford that focus on wild places outside. Just as these paintings give us fresh eyes to see nature, time outside gives us new ways to see the world. When is the last time you explored a trail? Played in a creek? Stopped to pick up a rock? How did it make you feel? Why is time in nature important for everyone, from our youngest children through adults? National efforts, including Take a Child Outside Week (which was started in North Carolina), provide ways to reconnect with the outdoors. Research has documented the benefits of time outside — from the way our brains are activated by a walk in nature, to a reduction in childhood obesity, to an increase in empathy for each other. Baird will explore ways to deepen our understanding of the impacts of time outside, and she will also create a space for reflecting on our own experiences in the outdoors.

7:30pm-Closing Live Music: Swing Guitars. Boone’s own gypsy band “Swing Guitars” has been active for almost a decade performing acoustic “Hot Club” style jazz in area restaurants, music festivals and civic concert series. Playing a mix of gypsy jazz standards, swing classics, originals and modern jazz tunes, the acoustic group focuses on the music of Django Reinhardt and other early jazz pioneers. Guitarists Andy Page, Jim Schaller and Jay Brown along with Ben McPherron on bass are experienced musicians widely known to High Country music fans. An evening with Swing Guitars promises a variety of sounds perfect for socializing, eating, drinking and dancing!

Saturday September 24

7:30pm-Closing Live Music: The Mountain Laurels. The Mountain Laurels are a Celti-lachian band from the High Country of North Carolina. The group performs a blend of Americana, Celtic and folk music typical to the roots culture of Western North Carolina. Instrumentation includes violin (or fiddle depending on if you’re from around here) hammer dulcimer, flute and guitar. This seasoned group of musicians has a repertoire that allows the flexibility to perform as a duo, trio, or full band.
