The Toe River Juried Art Show competition begins on Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Spruce Pine TRAC Gallery. Over 150 works were submitted for consideration and 80 pieces in all mediums were accepted and will be on display through Saturday, November 5. These works were juried by Sherry Masters. Currently she owns and operates the ArtsConnections that connect art lovers and art makers in custom designed tours. During a reception on Friday, October 7, she will present the awards. The appetizer potluck reception is from 5 to 7pm, free, and open to the public at the Spruce Pine Gallery.

This is TRAC’s second annual artist competition. Artists were invited to submit work from the surrounding states of SC, TN, VA, and GA. Denise Cook, the Arts Council’s Executive Director offered, “This second response was welcoming. This is an opportunity for our artists to showcase their work, and by opening up the competition to other states, we are inviting those outside our community to visit our counties’ mountainous beauty and limitless talent.”

The TRAC Gallery is located at 269 Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine. Hours are 10:30am to 5pm, Tuesday-Saturday. For more information visit the website, www.toeriverarts.org or call 828.765.0520.

The Toe River Arts Council is a non-profit organization founded in 1976 with a mission to connect the community with the arts. Be a Girl Scout — Opportunities for Local Girls and Adults

FUN! FRIENDS! ADVENTURE!
BE A GIRL SCOUT

As summer comes to an end, a new school year begins, including opportunities for local girls and adults to become a Girl Scout.

Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont has opportunities for volunteers who are committed to helping girls develop courage, confidence and character. The two go hand in hand; in other words, without the adult leaders, there is no Girl Scouting.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Girl Scouting – and Amber Mellon, Boone, is one Girl Scout volunteer who has served as troop leader to 13 girls in Troop 10492. Mellon wanted her daughter to enjoy Girl Scouting like she did as a child so she decided to become a leader. She commits approximately two hours a week and states it’s worth it!

“I have loved seeing how my girls have become more confident because of Girl Scouting,” Mellon said.

During the summer, her troop traveled to Atlanta. “The girls saw that a big city is not a scary place,” she said. “We also have a town garden that has grown as they have.”

As a result of Girl Scouting, she says the girls have gained various life skills and confidence in different situations outside their normal boundaries. These experiences Mellon speak about, not only create lasting memories, but also provides life lessons the girls can take with them through each stage of their life.

Mellon said, “I love hanging out with all my girls!”

About Girl Scouts of the USA

We’re 2.8 million strong—2 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe girls can change the world. It began over 100 years ago with one woman, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, and every year since, we’ve made her vision a reality, helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents. Today we continue the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. We’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs for girls from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to do something amazing.
