Fly-Tying Workshop at Buckeye Rec Aug. 24

We will be hosting another fly-tying workshop on Wed., August 24th 2016from 5:30 – 7:30pm here at the Buckeye Recreation Center. The first hour is an informational session open to the public (attendance highly recommended for beginners!), and the second hour will be a hands-on session where participants learn to tie your own fly. The hands-on portion of the class is open to the first 6 who RSVP for this portion of the class due to limits on available equipment. J.E. Broyhill Civic Center 2016-2017 Showcase of Stars

Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute’s J.E. Broyhill Civic Center has announced the lineup for its 2016-2017 Showcase of Stars. This season will feature music, comedy, dance and several shows from Foothills Performing Arts, the new resident theatre group for the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center.

Following is a schedule of events for the season:

Sept. 9-11 and 16-18                       

FPA Presents “A Woman of No Importance”

J.E. Broyhill Civic Center’s resident theatre group, Foothills Performing Arts will open the Showcase of Stars season with their rendition of “A Woman of No Importance.” Oscar Wilde’s satire on English high society and male/female relations is transported to the 1960’s for a groovy twist. Directed by Lori Franklin, this production is a great opportunity to see our community’s most talented actors as they bring this classic to life on the Civic Center stage. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. nightly with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays. Tickets for the show are $16.25 for adults and $9 for students and children. 

Oct. 1

Second City Touring Company

The Second City, Chicago’s legendary sketch and improv comedy brings “Free Speech! (While Supplies Last)” an irreverent look at America’s electoral insanity to the Civic Center Stage. This topical new show features political satire made famous by Second City stars like Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert and Keegan-Michael Key, as well as brand new scenes, songs and improv straight from their sold out shows in Chicago and Toronto. This must-see evening of comedy features some of Chicago’s best and brightest and is sure to leave you laughing. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $26 for adults and $11 for students and children.

Oct. 6                        

“What You Want Tour” with Tenth Avenue North/Hawk Nelson

Tenth Avenue North With Hawk Nelson will kick off their Fall 2016 Tour at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center on Oct. 6. Following high demand this spring on the All the Earth is Holy Ground Tour, Tenth Avenue North will bring songs from their newest album, Cathedrals, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard and iTunes Christian Charts and their radio hits like “No Man is an Island,” “By Your Side,” and “Worn.”   Dove-award winning band Hawk Nelson will bring their latest hits including “Diamonds,” “Drops in the Ocean” and “Words.” These two powerhouse Christian groups will have music fans of all ages on their feet for a fun night of great music and worship. Showtime is 7 p.m. Tickets for the show are $26. A group rate of $18 is available for groups of 10 or more.

Dec. 1-4

FPA Presents “A Christmas Carol”

Foothills Performing Arts will present their interpretation of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, “A Christmas Carol,” bringing to life the beloved holiday tale about a real-life Grinch who learns the true meaning of Christmas. Experience the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future as you’ve never seen them before. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. nightly with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays. Tickets for the show are $16.25 for adults and $9 for students and children.

Dec. 17           

“A Celtic Christmas” featuring The Silvio Martinat Swing Band and Puddingstone

Two local musical powerhouses will help usher in the holiday season with a night of unforgettable music. The Silvio Martinat Swing Band was formed nearly 3 decades ago as a performance class at CCC&TI. Founding members have kept the tradition of performing big band swing alive and well with performances throughout the region. Puddingstone formed first as a trio and has grown to a 7-member band with vocals, guitar, synthesizer and sometimes fiddle. The band plays a range of musical styles from Americana and Classical to Celtic, Folk and New Age. Hailed as one of North Carolina’s “Best Kept Secrets,” the band’s signature sound has earned them a loyal following throughout the state and beyond. These two local favorites will be the highlight of your Holiday season. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students and children.

Milton Harkey Bluegrass Presents Dailey and Vincent

Dubbed by CMT as “The Rock Stars of Bluegrass,” the Dailey & Vincent duo has been hailed throughout the music industry as one of the most exciting, reputable and elite Bluegrass bands in America. Dailey and Vincent have won numerous awards for their uniquely contagious and riveting music, including: three GRAMMY Award Nominations, 14 IBMA Awards (International Bluegrass Music Awards) which include numerous wins as “Entertainer of the Year,” “Vocal Group of the Year,” and “Album of the Year;” They’ve also won four Dove Awards for “Bluegrass Album of the Year” and “Bluegrass Song of the Year.” Each, a seasoned performer in his own right, both have performed alongside famous acts such as Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris and more.  Enjoy a night of unforgettable music with Dailey & Vincent, the rock stars of bluegrass. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $29 for adults and $13 for students and children.

Rockin’ Road to Dublin

Rockin’ Road to Dublin is the new sensation changing the Irish Dance world. A fusion of rock and Irish, Rockin’ Road combines the best of both worlds to thrust Irish Dance back into the spotlight. This stylish, can’t-miss spectacle is the perfect balance between concert and stage show! Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $30 for adults and $16 for students and children.

Feb. 11

Hot Rize (Dinner and a Show Event)

It didn’t take long after Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster, and Charles Sawtelle first appeared onstage together in 1978 for the bluegrass music world to realize that the Colorado band, Hot Rize, was something special.  It’s no surprise, then, that 24 years after their last studio album, the foursome brings an even deeper strength to bear on their new record, When I’m Free. Launching a nationwide tour in 2015, with their Western Swing alter-ego sidekicks, Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, Hot Rize is a making music for long-time fans and gathering countless new ones along the way.  The J.E. Broyhill Civic Center Catering Group will offer dinner prior to the show. Menu includes pulled pork BBQ, fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, collard greens and buttermilk biscuits. Dinner price is $13. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show only are $30 for adults and $16 for students and children.

March 11            

Caldwell Traditional Musicians Showcase

Next year will mark the 19th year of the wildly popular Caldwell Traditional Musicians Showcase. The event brings together some of our area’s most talented musicians and singer/songwriters for an evening of homegrown entertainment! Join local favorite Strictly Clean and Decent and friends for an evening of music, Caldwell County style. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $11 for adults and $5.50 for students and children.

April 20-23           

FPA Presents “A Midsummer Night’s Roller Disco”

William Shakespeare’s tale is re-imagined as a 1970’s spectacular set in a roller disco. The classic speech is paired with bright lights, outrageous costumes, non-traditional casting and will be a feast for the eyes and ears alike. It’s Shakespeare and roller skates, what’s not to love! Be sure to catch the talented local players of the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center’s resident theatre, Foothills Performing Arts for the spectacle that will be “A Midsummer Night’s Roller Disco!” Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. nightly with a 3 p.m. matinee on Sundays. Tickets for the show are $16.25 for adults and $9 for students and children.

The J.E. Broyhill Civic Center Catering Group will offer a buffet meal option prior to the April 21 showing of “A Midsummer Night’s Roller Disco.” The menu for the evening will include a salad bar, cheesy hamburger macaroni, ham quiche, potatoes, asparagus roll-ups and Pineapple Roller Skate Wheels. Meal is $13 per person.

Henry Cho

Actor, comedian, rancher Henry Cho defies stereotypes. “I’m an Asian with a Southern accent. To a lot of people, that right there is funny,” says Cho. As a stand up comedian, Cho has appeared on many television shows including “Bob Hope’s Young Comedians Special,” MTV’s “1/2 Hour Comedy Hour” and VH-1’s “Stand-Up Spotlight.” His other TV credits include guest roles on various sitcoms such as “Designing Women,” “Lenny,” “The New WKRP in Cincinnati” and a starring role in the TV movie “Revenge of the Nerds III: The Next Generation.” He has also appeared on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Arsenio Hall Show.” He has appeared in three feature films. First, starring opposite Tom Arnold and David Alan Grier in “McHale’s Navy.” In 2001, he appeared in the Farrelly Brothers’ movie “Say It Isn’t So,” in 2006’s “Material Girls” and had his own Comedy Central special entitled “Henry Cho: What’s That Clickin’ Noise?” Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the show are $16.25 for adults and $9 for students and children.

Aug. 10-12           

FPA Presents “Jack Tales”

Foothills Performing Arts presentation of “Jack Tales” will be the culmination of a free children’s acting camp offered to Caldwell County youth by the FPA. Jack Tales are based on Appalachian folk tales and retell the adventures of a young hero thrown on the road to adulthood who much overcome obstacles with bravery, intelligence and trickery. During the camp, students will learn the basics of acting, how to stage a play, adapt a story into scripts, make costumes and set pieces and perform in front of a live audience. Their work will lead to a full production showcased on the Civic Center stage and open to the public. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. nightly. Tickets for the show are $16.25 for adults and $9 for students and children.
