Programs and Events at the Watauga Library

August Greetings To All!

Little Free Libraries
As we wind down the summer (no — it can’t be!) keep the Back 2 School Festival in mind, as it will be Saturday, August 13th from 10 – 2 at Watauga High School. We will be there and ARLy, our friendly fox mascot will pay a visit — he is very excited, as he has not been to the new high school yet. August is Little Free Libraries Month, so we will be promoting these at the festival…
Check them out in the region: Little Free Libraries
What a great way to keep up with reading at the park, playground, and while you’re out and about  with the kids!
The Common Read is early this year!
Don’t forget… Tuesday, August 16th at 9 am, Jon Ronson, author of So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed will be here to talk about his book — books will be on sale after the talk! A big thank you to Appalachian State University for their long-time partnership in bringing this author to town! He will be  at the university convocation the day before he comes to the library. The library has copies available through our NC Cardinal Consortium.
Give Blood on August 5th
The American Red Cross will be here from 10-2:30 in the meeting room; there is an emergency need for blood presently. For an appointment, please call Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or go online to http://www.redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code “Watauga Library” to schedule a time.

Authors to Visit in August!

Wednesday, August 3rd at 5:30 pm
The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite you to join local author Lisa Muir for a book talk and signing. Dr. Muir’s collection of short stories entitled, Taking Down the Moon, gathers an eccentric cast of characters, animals, beauty queens and community college teachers, to name a few, and places them in such far flung places as Nevada’s Fire Valley, New Zealand and the western mountains of North Carolina. Click here to learn more or for more information, call 828-264-8784 ext. 2.
Tuesday, August 16th at 9:00 am
We would also like to invite you to join the 2016 Appalachian State University Common Reading Program author Jon Ronson for a public reading and book signing. So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is Ronson’s most recent book; it begins with the author’s surprising discovery that a Twitter account had been started under his name without his knowledge or approval, and that the account was continually active. From there, the book goes on to explore a number of questions arising from the public dimensions of social media and how it reflects other forms of social control. Click here to learn more or for more information, call 828-264-8784 ext. 2.
Saturday, August 20th at 2:00 pm
And finally, join local author Katerina Katsarka Whitley for the introduction of her new book, A New Love: A Novel of the First Century. “What was it like meeting St. Paul in Corinth – seeing him work with his hands and hearing his passionate words that revealed his profound and unbreakable connection to the living Christ? And what was it like to be a girl, highly educated and gifted and in love in mid-first century, in the Greco-Roman world? You will find the answers to these questions hidden among the layers of eros and agape in A New Love” (from katerinawhitley.net/latest-release/). For more information, call 828-264-8784 ext. 2.
