Wildflower Hike
Come view the end of summer wildflowers in the mountains and learn interesting facts about their use and history. Meet at the park office onAugust 13 at 2:00 PM.
Mountain Music Jam
Celebrate Southern Appalachian music with local musicians as they play traditional, Old Time and Bluegrass Sunday, August 21. All musicians are welcome, so bring your instrument and join in, or enjoy the view and entertainment. Participants will meet at the outdoor amphitheater from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. All programs are free and open to the public.
Summer Tree ID
Learn basic tree identification skills and a few interesting facts about the trees of Elk Knob State Park. Hike will be on Beech Tree Trail Saturday, August 27 at 2:00 PM.

Little Free Libraries
As we wind down the summer (no — it can’t be!) keep the Back 2 School Festival in mind, as it will be Saturday, August 13th from 10 – 2 at Watauga High School. We will be there and ARLy, our friendly fox mascot will pay a visit — he is very excited, as he has not been to the new high school yet. August is Little Free Libraries Month, so we will be promoting these at the festival…

Don’t forget… Tuesday, August 16th at 9 am, Jon Ronson, author of So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed will be here to talk about his book — books will be on sale after the talk! A big thank you to Appalachian State University for their long-time partnership in bringing this author to town! He will be at the university convocation the day before he comes to the library. The library has copies available through our NC Cardinal Consortium.

Authors to Visit in August!
 Wednesday, August 3rd at 5:30 pm The Watauga County Public Library would like to invite you to join local author Lisa Muir for a book talk and signing. Dr. Muir’s collection of short stories entitled, Taking Down the Moon, gathers an eccentric cast of characters, animals, beauty queens and community college teachers, to name a few, and places them in such far flung places as Nevada’s Fire Valley, New Zealand and the western mountains of North Carolina. From there, the book goes on to explore a number of questions arising from the public dimensions of social media and how it reflects other forms of social control. Legal Aid provides free do-it-yourself legal clinics at locations across the state each month. At the clinic you will watch a video that will explain the law and walk you through filling out the forms to file on your own. You will have the chance to ask general questions of a volunteer attorney after the video. Clinics are FREE and anyone can attend but you will need to register in advance. Valley Storm All-Star Cheerleading Tryouts in Wilkes
Valley Storm All-Stars (VSA) is a competitive all-star cheerleading program located in Wilkesboro, NC. Competitive cheerleading is a high intensity combination of jumping, stunting, tumbling, and dancing. The VSA Cheerleading Program is a highly energized, spirited group of athletes dedicated to blending discipline, practice, dedication, determination, skill and athleticism through a belief of one team, one goal. Over the past six years, VSA teams have been competing across the state and southeastern region. During the 2015-2016 competitive season, the program’s three teams have won numerous awards for their routines and choreography. At the last competition that VSA attended during this competitive season, the program earned 8 awards amongst its 3 teams. The Youth Level 1 team won 3rd place in their age group and 6th place out of 18 teams in their division. The Youth Level 2 team won 1st in their age group, 1st overall in their division, and Grand Champions of the entire competition. The Senior Level 3 team, won 1st in their age group and 1st overall in their division. The VSA program also received the “Best of the Best Award” for having the highest combined score of the day.
VSA is excited to announce that we will be having formal evaluations and try-outs for team placements for the 2016-2017 competitive season on August 5, 2016. Registration will begin at 5:00 pm and evaluations will start promptly at 5:30 pm. Our program is open to athletes of all ages and skill levels. Glimpse of Art History II
Begins Wednesday, Aug 10, 10:00am to 11:30am
For four weeks, this engaging class will delve into four different important periods of art. What defines the period? How does the work relate to other world events at the time? Who are or were the patrons? What characteristics are evident in the works in each group? We plan to discuss the Italian High Renaissance, The Impressionists, Modernism, and American Schools.
Dates for this class are: August 10, 10-11:30; August 17, 10-11:30; August 24,10-11:30; and August 31, 10-11:30.

Jane Wells Harrison was born in Kinston, North Carolina, and received a B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She received her MFA in painting and drawing from East Carolina University, conducting her thesis research using the medium of encaustic. She had additional study at the Vermont Studio Center and Penland School of Crafts. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally. Her work reveals a delight in surprise juxtapositions, strong design, and emphasis on color use.
Jane has taught encaustic at Penland School of Crafts, Pocosin Arts, Turchin Center, East Carolina University, and Caldwell Community College, where she was the director of the visual arts program until 2013. She lives in Happy Valley, near Lenoir, North Carolina, where she is a studio artist. Click here to visit Jane’s website.
