Third Thursday Movie: Tea with Mussolini

July 21st, 2016 – Watauga County Public Library – Meeting Room

The Watauga County Public Library’s movie group invites you to join us for a viewing of Tea with Mussolini on July 21st from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

Director Franco Zeffirelli’s 1999 film, Tea with Mussolini, tells the story of Luca Innocenti (born out of wedlock and not officially recognized by his father) and his struggle to assert his independence and find his way into a life of art. The coming-of-age tale is also a haunting evocation of a vanished world: that of the quiet city of Florence on the brink of World War II.

This film has an MPAA rating of PG and an approximate run-time of 117 minutes.

From Lincolnton, Kardol is drawn to paint her memories; she captures her feelings about places visited & people encountered during her many worldwide travels. Her works – realistic, abstract or a mix – are most expressive & though they tell her stories, they draw you in to create your own.

Taylor, making her home between Chapel Hill & nearby, is a fabric artist of the highest order! She creatively combines fabrics, objects & words to create colorful, thoughtful works while encouraging participation in the meditative & healing art of quilting. Her pieces are happy & soul-touching with appeal to any age & stage! In addition to her pieces, she also creates special cards embracing the same moods….

Kardol & Taylor are part of the 2016 Lowell Thomas Artists in Residence at Edgewood Cottage series this season. Their show will be open July 14-19 from 10:00AM – 6:00PM on weekdays & 12:00N – 6:00PM Sunday. The cottage is closed on Wednesday to install the next week’s show…

Randy Johnson to Talk About Grandfather Mountain Thursday at BRAHM

July 14, 2016 at 6 PM – 7 PM

Longtime Boone area writer Randy Johnson will present a talk based on his new book, Grandfather Mountain: The History and Guide to an Appalachian Icon, which UNC press is calling “the definitive book on the mountain.” Johnson was the mountain’s founding trail manager, and his 1970s hiking program kept the trails open after owner Hugh Morton had closed the backcountry due to hiker deaths. Johnson will take an unprecedented look at a mountain whose very name, he points out, “makes it a patriarch of our collective family.” Copies of Johnson’s book, Grandfather Mountain, will be available for purchase and signing.

The talk will be followed by a Q & A session and light refreshments. More information available on our website.
