App Voices Congratulates BREMCO on New Energy Saving Program
Members of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation (BRE) have a new way to pay for improving the energy efficiency of their homes thanks to BRE’s new Energy SAVER Loan Program. BRE provides electricity to more than 74,000 residents of all or parts of seven counties in western North Carolina.
Appalachian Voices has promoted an on-bill energy efficiency finance program through BRE for nearly two years, and has worked with the electric co-op, local organizations, residents and businesses towards developing such a program to help consumers pay the upfront costs of making energy-efficiency improvements to their home.
“Energy efficiency is the most readily available and easiest way to save energy and money. Plus, it makes our homes more comfortable and healthy, helps protect the environment and strengthens local economies. Unfortunately, many families can’t afford the upfront costs,” says Rory McIlmoil, energy policy director for Appalachian Voices, a nonprofit organization based in Boone. “We congratulate Blue Ridge Electric staff for the work they have put in to bring this program to fruition and we look forward to continue working with them to expand the program beyond the pilot phase.”
Energy efficiency improvements can reduce wasted energy and lower electric bills, and make homes healthier and more comfortable. As residents improve the efficiency of their homes, they’re also improving the community by helping to protect the environment and providing jobs to local businesses and contractors who perform the upgrades.
The new Energy SAVER Loan Program allows qualified BRE members to borrow up to $7,500 to make energy efficiency improvements such as insulation, air sealing and heating and cooling system upgrades. Borrowers will pay back the loan through a new monthly charge on their electric bill. BRE also announced the availability of rebates that can lower the cost of energy improvements and high efficiency appliances for all members.
The Energy SAVER Loan Program lays the groundwork for improving energy efficiency across the High Country region. “We know that thousands of Blue Ridge Electric members could potentially benefit from this program,” says Amber Moodie-Dyer, energy savings outreach coordinator with Appalachian Voices. “So this is a significant achievement and we commend Blue Ridge for continuing to show their commitment to their members and a dedication to supporting local economic development.”

Appalachian Chorale to Perform May 3
The Hayes School of Music’s Appalachian Chorale will perform Tuesday, May 3, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the Appalachian State University campus. Admission is free.
The Appalachian Chorale features 73 singers and will be conducted by Linda Larson and accompanied by Joby Bell, Ling Hsiao, students Shane Watson and Zach Bowyer, and James Stokes on trumpet.
The chorale will first perform “A Song of the Road” by Jonathan Santore based on a Robert Louis Stevenson poem and “Sure on this Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen based on a poem by James Agee.
“Frostiana” by Randall Thompson will then be performed based on the poetry of Robert Frost, followed by “Stomp Your Foot” from “The Tender Land” by Aaron Copland.
The chorale will conclude the recital with “Ave Verum Corpus (Hail True Body), K. 618” by Mozart.
Hayes School to Present “Cornocopia” Concert May 4
The Hayes School of Music will present a recital titled “Cornocopia: An Evening of Music for the Horn” Wednesday, May 4, at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall on the Appalachian State University campus. Admission is free.
The concert features students in the horn studio of Professor Karen L. Robertson. The recital will begin with “The War Within” by Lindsay Hemingway, performed by students on the horn, bass and piano. Then, students will perform “Sonata for Horn and Piano” by Trygve Madsen.
A soloist will perform “Fantasy for Horn” by Malcolm Arnold. Piano and horn students will then perform “Sonata for Horn and Piano” by Bernhard Heiden, “Concerto for Horn in E-flat Major, K. 412” by Mozart and “Nocturne” from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Felix Mendelssohn. A horn soloist will perform “España” by Bujanovsky.
Horn and piano students will then perform “Concerto for Horn in B-flat Major, Op. 91,” “Nocturne” by Reinhold Gliere and “Concerto for Horn in E-flat Major, K. 417” by Mozart.
Community Music School Recital Sunday
Students in the Community Music School in Appalachian State University’s Hayes School of Music will present a recital Saturday, April 30, in Broyhill Music Center on campus. Admission is free. The recital will be directed by Laura Cho Stokes.
Students in the piano program will perform at 1 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. The piano instructors are Hannah Gore and Jasmine Tilden. Eleven students will perform.
Piano and vocal students will perform at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Recital Hall. Vanessa Van Valin is the voice instructor, Jonathan Asbell is the voice accompanist and Hannah Gore is the piano instructor. Ten students will perform.
Piano, guitar and violin students will perform at 2 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Hannah Gore and Bair Shagdaron are piano instructors, Chelsea Whittaker and Kelsey Philbrick are violin instructors and Justin Butler is the guitar instructor. Sixteen students will perform.
The Community Music School is a program of Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music. The school provides non-credit music instruction for children and adults in the local community as well as surrounding Western North Carolina counties.
