April 16 Gospel Choir Concert to Benefit Willie Fleming Scholarship

The Appalachian State University African-American Alumni Network is hosting the inaugural ASU Gospel Choir Reunion Concert on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at 6 p.m. at Boone United Methodist Church. Admission is free but donations are accepted and all net proceeds will go toward the Willie C. Fleming Scholarship.

In 1975, Dr. Willie C. Fleming Jr., established what was known as the BSA Gospel Choir, now known as ASU Gospel Choir. The choir served and still serves as an important community for current and former students during their time at Appalachian. This ensemble allows students the opportunity to establish meaningful relationships and build a special bond with their fellow Mountaineers.

The Gospel Choir will perform a medley of selections from traditional to contemporary gospel songs and feature former gospel choir members from 1970 – 2015 along with five former Gospel Choir directors including the founder of the BSA Gospel Choir. The current ASU Gospel Choir will also perform.

The Fleming Scholarship was established to award a scholarship to an incoming freshman with a “demonstrated desire to promote diversity.”

Midnight at the OASIS Set for May 6

OASIS, Inc. (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information, and Shelter) is the local non-profit serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence. All of their services are free and confidential, and last year the agency received over 1,900 crisis and information calls from this very community. This spring, the agency’s 13th annual fundraiser “Midnight at the OASIS” will take place Friday, May 6th at the Meadowbrook Inn in Blowing Rock from 7 to 11 PM. The Asheville-based band, Laditude, will be back by popular demand! As in years past, there will be heavy hors d’oeuvres with Middle Eastern themed food and a cash bar. Tickets are $35 per person; proceeds raised at the event are used to operate OASIS’s confidential, emergency shelter for women and children currently fleeing intimate partner violence. Secure online ticket purchase available at www.oasisinc.org, or you may mail a check to P.O. Box 1591, Boone, NC 28607. We hope to see you there!
