LA Poet Laureate Luis Rodriguez to Read His Work April 28 at ASU

Luis J. Rodriguez, the official Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, will read from his work April 28 at Appalachian State University. His presentation is sponsored by the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series.

Rodriguez will present a talk for area middle school youth April 28 beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Blue Ridge Ballroom on campus. The public also is invited to attend. His reading will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the student union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom. Books will be available for sale and signing.

His campus visit is co-sponsored by Appalachian’s Diversity Speakers Series, which is a part of the Office of Multicultural Student Development. Appalachian’s GEAR UP office has arranged for middle school groups from Wilkes, Ashe and Yadkin counties to attend the afternoon talk for youth. Western Youth Network will also bring students from its two Watauga County sites.

In addition to writing poetry, Rodriguez is also a novelist, memoirist, short story writer, and children’s book writer, as well as a community and urban peace activist, mentor, healer, youth and arts advocate.

He has published 15 books, including the best-selling memoir “Always Running, La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A.”  His latest book is the sequel “It Calls You Back: An Odyssey Through Love, Addiction, Revolutions, and Healing.” His poetry collections include “The Concrete River,” “Poems Across the Pavement,” and “Trochemoche.”

 About the Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series

 The visiting writers series is named in honor of Hughlene Bostian Frank (class of 1968). Frank is a member of the Appalachian State University Foundation Board, a 2013 Appalachian Alumni Association Outstanding Service award recipient, past member of Appalachian’s Board of Trustees and generous supporter of the university.

The 2015-16 Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series is supported by the Appalachian State University Foundation, Appalachian’s Office of Academic Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of English, the Office of Multicultural Student Development, the university’s Common Reading Program, the University Bookstore, Belk Library and Information Commons and the Appalachian Journal.

Business sponsors are The Gideon Ridge Inn, the New Public House & Hotel and The Red Onion Restaurant. Community sponsors include John and the late Margie Idol, Paul and Judy Tobin, Alice Naylor and Thomas McLaughlin.

Parking is free on campus after 5 p.m. The Library Parking Deck on College Street, which opens to the general public after 5:30 p.m., is recommended. To reach Plemmons Student Union, cross College Street and follow the walkway between the chiller plant and the University Bookstore, passing the University Post Office and entering Plemmons Student Union on the second floor.

Hayes Faculty Spring Concert Set for April 5

Faculty members from the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University will celebrate April’s arrival with an April 5 program titled “An Evening of Spring Renewal” that is based on compositions related to water or spring.

The recital begins at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

What better way to open the program with Douglas Miller’s arrangement of Johann Strauss Jr.’s waltz “Voices of Spring, Op. 410” for clarinet. Miller will be accompanied by pianist John Coffey. “Venetian Gondola Song, Op 19, No. 6” and “Venetian Gondola Song, Op. 30, No. 6” by Felix Mendelssohn will follow, performed by pianist Hiu-Wah Au.

Next on the program is “Jewel Lake” by Bill Douglas. The composition will be performed by bassoonist Jon Beebe and pianist Junie Cho.

Pianist Rodney Reynerson will perform “Prelude in D-flat Major, Op. 28, No. 15” also known as “Raindrop,” by Frédéric Chopin and “Gardens in the Rain” by Claude Debussy.

The gospel song “Storm Comin’” by Ruth Moody will be performed by vocalists Lauren Hayworth, Suzi Mills and Jenny Snodgrass.

Violinist Nancy Bargerstock and pianist Bair Shagdaron will perform the fourth movement of another “rain” composition –“Sonata, Op. 87 “Regen (Rain) Sonate” by Johannes Brahms

“Auf dem Wasser zu singen,” which means on the water to sing, will be performed by mezzo-soprano Priscilla Porterfield and pianist Rodney Reynerson. The composition is by Franz Schubert.

Trumpet players James Stokes, Brent Bingham, David Marvel and Brittney Self will perform “Water Games” by Scott Meister.

The evening concludes with “Whitewater Rapids” from Eric Ewazen’s “Roaring Fork.” Performing the composition will be flutist Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, oboist Alicia Chapman, clarinetist Andrea Cheeseman, horn player Karen Robertson and bassoonist Jon Beebe.

Color Run Set for April 15 in Valle Crucis

COLOR RUN – April 15th 6pm

The Run for Fun. Valle Crucis Color Run (or walk) on April 15th at 6:00 pm will take a quick 1.5 mile tour from Valle Crucis School through the Valle Crucis Park while getting blasted with color! This exciting first time family event will be followed by a post party including the Kona Shaved Ice Truck, Pizza, Fun and Games at Valle Crucis School.  Registration for the public begins at 4:30pm on 4/15. Register Now for Yoga at the Senior Center

The next session of Yoga classes are scheduled to meet from 6:15-7:15pm at the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center on Tuesdays beginning April 5th. Classes will also be held at the Western Watauga Community Center (WWCC) on Thursdays starting April 7th from 11am-noon.  The instructor, Akal Dev Sharonne, has been a yoga practitioner and teacher for more than 30 years.  Her classes are a delightful blend of humor, challenge and wisdom.  The cost of each 12-week session is $75.00 per person.  Call Akal Dev to register, 828-264-1384.

ASU to Test Campus Wide Siren System April 6
