1) Poetry from Wales Celebrated Feb. 28

In Celebration of St. David”s Day, the Welsh National Day, there will be a program of Poetry from Wales from 3-5 pm in the meeting room at the Watauga County Library.   All welcome.   For more information call Mary Gray at 264 5620.   In case of bad weather, call Mary or the library or check on the web to make sure the library is open.

2) March Programs at Elk Knob State Park

Salamanders

Join a Park Ranger on Saturday, March 7 at 1 pm to learn about salamanders and how they are great indicators of the state of the environment. Through a PowerPoint program you will learn about the native salamanders found at Elk Knob State Park. For more information or for travel conditions to and within the park, please call 828-297-7261.

The Northern Hardwood Forest

This natural community is rare outside of Canada and New England and present mostly in the Appalachian Mountains south of Pennsylvania. Come find out about the plants and animals that you won’t see anywhere else in the South. Meet at the park office at 1 p.m. on Saturday March 14.

Winter Tree ID

Do some forests look like just a bunch of brown twigs in winter? Learn some basic tips for identifying hardwood trees without the benefit of their leaves. Meet at the trailhead parking lot on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m.

Folk Toys

Stop by the office and visit with a ranger as he shares a few folk toys from Appalachia Sunday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. Participants will be challenged to operate each toy successfully. Children are encouraged to attend this short program.

8 p.m.-Closing Live Music: The Plate Scrapers. The Plate Scrapers are a an energetic string band out of Western Maryland performing their own intriguing and captivating originals as well as a tasteful selection of covers and bluegrass favorites. This passion-driven quartet consisting of Evan Bell (upright bass), Brett Kretzer (Mandolin, Vocals) Derek Kretzer (Banjo, Vocals) and Andrew Jordan (Guitar, Vocals) draws influence from their wide background in music including folk, jam, jazz, blues, americana and of course above all, bluegrass. Freakin’ Ferkin Friday at Five continues with the release of a firkin at 5: Hazy Holler IPA with Grapefruit.

8-11 p.m. Live Music: Andy Ferrell. Currently emerging with his debut EP whose title, I Was Born, boldly asserts his presence as a compelling new voice on the traditional American roots music scene, Andy Ferrell grew up in the small Blue Ridge Mountain town of Boone, North Carolina, not far from the birthplace and home of his greatest musical influence, bluegrass/country/folk music legend Doc Watson.(Optional Cover)

4) Mother Earth News Fair Held April 11-12

The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR is a family-friendly sustainable living event that features 200 hands-on workshops and demonstrations from experts on real food, organic gardening, homesteading, renewable energy, green building and remodeling, DIY projects, small-scale livestock, green transportation, natural health, and related topics. Notable speakers include Joel Salatin, cheesemaker Claudia Lucero, market gardener Pam Dawling, and renewable energy expert Richard Freudenberger. Also on the grounds: hands-on children’s projects; heritage-breed livestock; an alternative-fuel vehicle display; vendor, livestock and craft demonstrations; and local and organic food offerings. Pre-order weekend wristband passes for $25. Passes will cost $30 at the gate. Children 17 and under get in free. The event offers a limited number of VIP lanyards. VIPs receive priority seating at workshops, catered meals and other perks.
