HCNA TeleFest Ski Event Set for Feb. 20

The High Country Nordic Assn. Announces its 6th Annual TeleFest. TeleFest is a skiing event that features Telemark skiing, Telemark Clinics, Prizes and Community Fellowship.

Who we are: HCNA is a non-profit group of Southern Appalachian Telemark and cross-country skiers based in Boone NC. Our mission is to promote Telemark and back-country skiing in the NC Northwest High country.

What is Telemark: Telemark skiing is a ski technique that combines elements of Nordic or cross-country skiing with those of alpine skiing. It was developed in Telemark Norway in 1868 and has remained essentially the same since then.

When is the event: TeleFest will be Saturday, February 20, 2016 beginning at 9AM

Where: TeleFest will be at Beech Mountain Resort in Beech Mountain NC. Participants will meet at the View Haus Lodge.

Tickets: Will be on sale to participants at the View Haus Lodge. The cost of a ticket is $60 which includes an all day lift ticket, a HCNA 2016 TeleFest T-shirt, and HCNA bumper sticker.

Events: TeleFest 2016 features beginner and advanced Telemark ski clinics, free skiing, drawings for prizes. Participants are encouraged to bring any extra gear for a swap, sale, and show.

See A Patch of Blue at Watauga Library Feb. 11

The Watauga County Public Library’s movie group invites you to join us for a viewing of A Patch Of Blue on February 11th from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.

Director Guy Green’s 1965 film A Patch Of Blue tells the story of a blind, uneducated white girl (Shelley Winters) who is befriended by an African-American man (Sidney Poitier) that is determined to help her escape her impoverished and abusive home life.

This film has an MPAA rating of Unrated and an approximate run-time of 105 minutes.

ASU Early Music Ensemble to Perform Feb. 7

Harmonia Baroque, the Hayes School of Music’s early music ensemble, will perform Feb. 7 at 4 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center at Appalachian State University. Admission is free.

Ensemble members are  Nancy Schneeloch-Bingham, traverse, Alicia Chapman, hautbois, Chandler Fadero, violin, Priscilla Porterfield, mezzo-soprano, Corinne Cassini, cello, Nick Allion, cello, Douglas James, theorbo, and Michael Bell, harpsichord.

The program will feature works from the 17th and 18th centuries, including compositions by Giovanni Platti, Evaristo Felice Dall’Abaco, Jean-Baptiste Lully and Henry Purcell.

Beer and Cookies, College Week Coming Up at Beech

Beech Mountain Brewing Co. presents its very first beer pairing night Friday January, 29th 2016.  The tasting starts at 5pm, at $10 per person receive a flight of five beers selectively paired with an assortment of Girl Scout cookies.  That’s right beer and Girl Scout cookies…does it get any better?

The selected flight of beers include:

  • 5506′ Pale Ale: Hoppy-Citrus-Elevated. The 5506′ Pale Ale has an excellent supporting malt backbone while showcasing American C hops – centennial, cascade, and chinook – a prime example of the American Pale Ale style.
  • Patroller Porter: Roast-Coffee-Relax. With its roasted complexity, this beer is a coffee lover’s dream brew, reminiscent of your favorite winter warmer.
  • Wee Heavy Bevvy Scotch Ale: Rich-Caramel-Smooth. Recommended as a slow drinking beer, you’ll discover layers of caramel, dark fruit and roast in this complex heavy bevvy.
  • Beech Blonde: Light-Refreshing-Fun. This smooth golden ale offers a clean, honey flavor to enjoy every season.
  • Powderbowl IPA: Tropical-Pine-Lit. The smooth bitterness of this brew is complimented with pine, citrus, and tropical hops.

This delicious assortment of beers will be paired with new and classic favorites of Girl Scout cookies. To find out which cookies pair best with Beech Mountain Brewing Co. beers, you’ll have to be there!

As if beer and cookies isn’t already as good as it gets; The Nautical Wheelers will perform in the Beech Mountain Brewing Co. from 5:30 to 9pm! This acoustic trio hails from the foothills for North Carolina performing original tracks mixed with covers from some of the best music ever created.  Drawing influences from 70’s rock, country, and blues this band has something for everyone.  There is no cover to attend the show. All ages are welcome.

Beginning January 30th through February 7th, save big on lift tickets with a valid student ID when presented in the Group Sales office. Discounts on rental equipment are also available through the Group Sales office; advance reservations are required. CollegeWeek would not be complete without live music performances in the Beech Mountain Brewing Co. and the Beech Tree Bar and Grille. Kicking the week off, join us for a Girl Scout Cookie and Beer pairing. With live music from the Nautical Wheelers, this is an event you won’t want to miss! Join us Saturday, in the Beech Tree Bar and Grille for live music from Shelby Rae Moore.  The following weekend, Red Bull returns bringing a two live DJs both Saturday, February 6th and Sunday, February 7th. DJ performances will be held daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in both the Beech Tree Village and on the Skybar deck. Finish off your Saturday night with live music from Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band!
