1) Apply Now for the 2016 Watauga Leadership Challenge

The Boone Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for the 2016 Watauga Leadership Challenge.  This program provides a comprehensive overview of the community and introduces participants to leaders in the fields of government, education, health care and business and industry.

Larry Byerly of Johnson Price Sprinkle said, “Participants gain a realistic understanding of how our community works.  They learn from the movers and shakers – the people who have a vision for the future.”  Jonathan Allen of Allen Wealth Management comments that “the program benefits the community as well, because Watauga Leadership identifies potential leaders and gives them the encouragement needed to spur them on to local action and involvement.”  JPS and Allen Wealth Management believe in the Watauga Leadership Challenge so strongly that they have committed to be the Signature Sponsors of this leadership development program.

“Because of the intensity of the program, Watauga Leadership participants and their employers are asked to make a major time commitment,” said Dan Meyer, the Chamber’s President/CEO.  “We begin with a two day retreat in January, designed to build a sense of teamwork among the participants. It also sets the stage for the program’s six full-day sessions scheduled monthly until graduation in July 2016.”

Topics include: Tourism & Cultural Resources, Economy & Leadership, Environment & Sustainability, Education, Government & Public Safety, Health Care & Human Services and Lessons in Leadership.

The 2016 Leadership class is limited to 24 participants with preference given to Watauga County residents.  Tuition is $595, which includes all program materials, lunches, refreshments and graduation celebration.

2) Samaritan’s Purse Hosting Local Collections for Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes

This month, locations in the Boone area will serve as collection sites for Operation Christmas Child—the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind. The annual Samaritan’s Purse project is a favorite of many Boone residents, families, churches and groups who spread joy to millions of children around the world by filling shoeboxes with a “Wow!” item—like a doll or soccer ball—other fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement.

Through the simple act of filling a shoebox, someone in Boone can make a tangible difference in the life of a child halfway around the world. Anyone can participate and bring joy to a child facing difficult circumstances,” said Regional Director Keith Burney.

During National Collection Week, Nov. 16 – 23, Boone and surrounding area residents hope to contribute more than 65,000 gift-filled shoeboxes to the 2015 global goal of reaching 11 million children in need.
