1) Easter Bunny is Bouncing into Banner Elk on March 28th!

On March 28th, Banner Elk is celebrating Easter with fun for all, even the pets!  This is the second year of the Banner Elk Egg Hunt and it was so well attended last year that the number of eggs has been doubled! One golden egg will be hidden somewhere in Tate Evans park for a lucky adult, it will contain an membership to the Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce!

Starting at 9:30 a.m., Breakfast with the Bunny at the Banner Elk Café.  Next, the Children’s Egg Hunt starts in Tate Evans park at 11:00 a.m.  After the egg hunt, stick around for free family activities including a magic show by Jacob McCormick, face painting, music, and meet the Easter bunny!

The pet events will begin at 12:30 p.m. with Pet Photos with the Bunny.  All donations will benefit the Avery County Humane Society.  The Pet Egg hunt will begin at 1 p.m., My Best Friends Barkery is stuffing the pet eggs with lots of dog treats and some special prizes! After the egg hunt pet photos will continue.

Sponsoring the Easter event this year is The Town of Banner Elk, The Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce, Cornerstone Cabins and Lodge, and Fred and Sherry Abernathy, My Best Friends Barkery and the Avery County Humane Society.

2) Watauga County Senior Centers registering students for Yoga classes now

The next 12-week session of Gentle Yoga is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 31st from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in Boone at the Lois Harrill senior center and on Thursday, April 9th from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Western Watauga community center in Cove Creek.

The cost of each 12-week session is $74 per person (pre paid in advance).

The deadline to register is the first day of class during regular business hours.

This class is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced yoga students. The instructor, Akal Dev Sharonne, has been a yoga practitioner and teacher for more than 30 years. Her classes are a delightful blend of humor, challenge, and wisdom. This class is designed for seniors age 60+ but other adults may sign up if there is space.

3) Quilt Meeting

The Mountain Laurel Quilt  Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 2nd, at 1:30 p.m.  We meet on the second floor of the Senior Center on Poplar Grove Connector in Boone.  Quilters: this is the time of year when we think of Spring cleaning.  Join us and meet Mary Ann Rook for her tips on “Sewing Table Organizer”.  It’s always helpful to have a new approach on how to organize your quilt room.  Call Dolores at 295-6148 if you have any questions.

4) The New Wilkesboro Dragway Upholds Traditions Of Speed

For decades Wilkes County, N.C. has been known for speed, horsepower and racing and when NASCAR left Wilkes County many thought racing had left the area. They could not have been more wrong because the love for drag racing keeps racing in Wilkes County alive. From the early days of moonshining, the people of Wilkes County love speed and have modified their cars to go faster. Over the years this love gave new birth to meaningful speed racing.

Wilkesboro Dragway has been going strong for decades and 2015 is no exception but does mark another milestone for organized racing. This year, Wilkesboro Dragway will celebrate 60 years of operation and new owners Phil and Pat Halbedel have taken the reins of NC’s oldest drag strip with the commitment to keep traditions going while intergrating some of their own traditions.”People just don’t have that many choices to go out as a family anymore” said Habidale. “We want to change that. Spending time together as a family is important and we want to offer them a safe and affordable option for that,” he continues. This is why Phil and Pat Halbedel is commited to keeping the traditions of affordable family and friendly fun in Wilkes County and why it is important to keep Wilkesboro Dragway in the forefront of what it has been known for; family and fun.

Wilkesboro Dragway is streamlining it’s schedule so families and fans can plan outtings at the center of speed in Wilkes County by keeping the fans schedule in mind.

Gate will now open at 12 noon with racing starting at 4 p.m. From April thru October, along with the “Stars and Cars” of the Wilkesboro Dragway Points Series racers, the fans favorite touring series, the “Classic Gear Jammers” will be racing the first Saturday of every month. The speedsters of the “4.90 Outlaws” and the “CHRA True Street 75’s” will be struting their stuff throughout the season as well as many other surprises planned for this years events.

So come out and be part of history in the making as N.C.’s oldest dragway, Wilkesboro Dragway celebrates 60 years of speed!

9-12 p.m. Live Music with Rhett Huffman, Josh Bertram, Justin Quinn and Ryan Van Fleet. Members of Native L, they will be playing an extra special blend of funk, rock, and soul.

6) Elkland Art Center’s 5th Annual Trash n’ Fashion Fundraiser

Elkland Art Center is pairing local businesses with designers to create wearable art out of trash!

Appalachian State University students are putting together another fabulous runway show. Students take landfill-bound material from local sponsoring businesses and organizations and make outrageous wearable art. Local artist and fashion maverick, Tommy Lee, will MC. You don’t want to miss this!

April 10th at Strand Beads/Bald Guy King Street.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with music by The Rubber Checks.

Runways will be at 7 and 7:45 p.m.

A special bonus this year, the Watauga County Library Teen FANDOM Club will be making and presenting their own fashions.
