1) Appalachian Jazz Ensemble II to Perform on Oct. 27

Sit back and enjoy the jazz stylings of Appalachian State University’s Jazz Ensemble II during an Oct. 27 performance on campus. The 18-member ensemble, directed by Rod Berry, will perform beginning at 8 p.m. in Broyhill Music Center’s Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The performance opens with George and Ira Gershwin’s “Love is Here to Stay,” followed by Carl Strommen’s “Tampico.” Also on the program is “Bebop ‘N’ Georgia” by Mark Taylor and “The Fool on the Hill” arranged by Mark Taylor, featuring a flugelhorn solo by Sam Massimilla.

Other jazz arrangements include Sammy Nestico’s “That Warm Feeling,” “Pretty Little Nieda” arranged by Don Sebesk and “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” arranged by Phil Wilson.

2) OctubaFest Concert Set for Oct. 26 at ASU

It’s time for OctubaFest, the annual concert featuring compositions transcribed for tubas and euphoniums. The concert by the Tuba-Euphonium Collective in the Hayes School of Music will begin at 8 p.m. Oct. 26 in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

The program features the William Tell Overture, “Mars, The Bringing of War” from Holst’s “The Planets,” “Nimrod” from Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” “Night on Bald Mountain” by Mussorgsky  and “Danse Macabre” by Saint-Saëns, among others.

The Tuba-Euphonium Collective is a student ensemble. The director is Bethany Wiese, an instructor in the Hayes School of Music and a doctoral candidate at Northwestern University.

3) High Gravity Adventures to Host Rec Fest on Friday

This Friday, October 23rd, High Gravity Adventures and High Country Recreation will be hosting the inaugural Rec Fest 2015!  One afternoon at High Gravity Adventures of free mini-clinics, door prizes, and tons of fun for you and your family to come and check out!

From 3pm – 6pm local businesses and organizations will be hosting various types of engaging mini-clinics. Come and learn a new sport!  Mast General Store will be hosting a “Leave No Trace” clinic, Rise To It climbing wall hosting a climbing clinic on their mobile climbing wall, Boone Ultimate Alliance (BUA) will be instructing us on disc throwing, High Country Yoga will be doing mini yoga sessions on the lawn, and much more!

From 6pm – 7pm we will be giving away door prizes and our community sponsors will announce their upcoming events!  All door prizes are being donated by our amazing sponsors. The list includes (but is not limited to) a Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation 2016 Pool Pass, a High Gravity Adventures 2016 Season Pass, an ENO hammock (compliments of Mast General Store), and a voucher for a High Country Yoga class.

After 7pm, Appalachian Mountain Brewery will be selling their fantastic beer and cider alongside live music, and night climbing tickets for High Gravity Adventures will be 40% OFF! This Rec Fest discount brings Adult tickets to only $39, Junior tickets to only $29, and Kid’s course tickets to only $19!

4) See Catawba Meadows Living History Village in Morganton on Saturday

The new Phifer-Johnson House is well underway at the Catawba Meadows Living History Village. You may view this any time, but there will be a special event at Catawba Meadows Recreation Park in Morganton, NC on Saturday, October 24, 2015, from 9:30 AM until 3:00 PM. Primitive skills expert, Tyler Lavenburg, who is constructing the house, will be on hand to answer questions about the house. This event is free and open to the public, and is made possible by a grant from the Unifour Foundation Endowment Fund of the Catawba Valley Community Foundation

House # 1 (the Huffman-Cornwell house) in the replica village is near completion, and house #2, the Phifer-Johnson House will be completed by the end of the year. This house has been made possible through a generous grant from the Phifer-Johnson Foundation.

We invite the community to joint us at the Catawba Meadows Living History Village on October 24 for a day of exciting activities. This family-friendly event is free, and will offer hands-on activities for children, primitive skills demonstrations, the opportunity to view Spanish artifacts from the Berry site, and a chance to meet our new Staff Archaeologist, Melissa Timo, as well as our Senior Archaeologist, Dr. David Moore.
