2) NC ABC Seller/Server Training Seminars in Boone

As college students across North Carolina return to school for the Fall semester, the Governor’s Substance Abuse and Underage Drinking Prevention and Treatment Task Force, along with law enforcement agencies, the ABC Commission, DMV License and Theft, local ABC Boards and the Western Youth Network Prevention Coalition are increasing their focus on preventing underagedrinking. A crucial part of this intensified focus includes providing training programs for ABC on-premise (private clubs and restaurants) and off-premise (convenience stores, ABC stores, and grocery stores etc.) permit holders in the High Country area to ensure that these businesses fully understand and comply with the law. The NC ABC Commission conducts on-going year-round training for new and existing on and off-premise establishments and stores. These additional training offerings are in coordination with the Governor’s Substance Abuse and Underage Drinking Task Force’s six-university campus grant program to further educate the server/seller community on proper alcohol sales.

These programs, two of which will be held on Tuesday, September 15 at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the McKinney Alumni Center (553 Blowing Rock Rd, Boone, NC 28608), will provide training, at no cost, in the following areas:

  • Eliminating Sales to Underage: Acceptable IDs, Checking IDs, Fake IDs, Server Discretion, Criminal Consequences, Civil Liability, Employee Disqualification
  • Private Club Rules: Hours of sale, Age requirement, Employees consuming
  • Eliminating Sale to Intoxicated Persons: Server Discretion, Criminal Consequences, Civil Liability, Employee Disqualification
  • Other Laws, Rules, and Regulations and corresponding penalties

In addition to promoting responsible business practices regarding the sale of alcoholic beverages, the seminars align with the goal of the NC ABC Commission’s Talk It Out Campaign, a new statewide initiative targeting underage drinking in North Carolina.

“We are pleased to support this type of focused training in cities and towns where underage drinking has an immense impact,” said Jim Gardner, Chairman of the NC ABC Commission. “Sellers and servers of alcoholic beverages at establishments around these schools have an enormous responsibility. We want to be pro-active in helping them to do their jobs correctly when it comes to preventing underage drinking.”

After the programs, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) and local law enforcement in Watauga County may intensify enforcement efforts to ensure that ABC permitted businesses are fully complying with all laws and regulations, including those that prohibit underage people from purchasing, possessing, or consuming alcohol.
