Those who would like to volunteer can contact Nikki atnikki@blueridgeconservancy.org.

The event was started 16 years ago as a small fundraiser for what was then known as the High Country Conservancy. The race was originally established by a small group of people on the board of the High Country Conservancy as a fun way to raise money and also to highlight the scenic Mayview neighborhood in Blowing Rock.

Sponsors for this year’s event are Stick Boy Bread Co., Blue Ridge Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Bistro Roca, Blowing Rock Furniture Gallery, ZAP Fitness, MPrints, Hemlock Inn, Blowing Rock Brewing, The Town of Blowing Rock, Attractions Print, Ray’s Weather, and Appalachian Ski Mountain.

8) Ribbon Cutting for Upper Thunderhole/China Creek Trail in Blowing Rock Saturday

WHAT: Join us for the dedication and ribbon cutting of the newly restored Upper Thunderhole/China Creek Trail in Blowing Rock. The trail will be dedicated to Kirby Brown, a longtime Blowing Rock homeowner and passionate conservation advocate.

WHEN:  Saturday, August 22, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.

WHERE: The trailhead, located adjacent to the Blowing Rock Equestrian Preserve at 1280 Laurel Lane, Blowing Rock, NC. Look for directional signs around the Equestrian complex to assist you with parking.

WHO: Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC) and NC Youth Conservation Corps (NCYCC).

WHY: A crew from the North Carolina Youth Conservation Corps spent the summer clearing the trail, installing water bars and switchbacks, and making the trail more accessible and safer for the public to enjoy. We will dedicate this historic U.S Forest Service trail to Kirby Brown, a lifelong hiker, birder, and explorer of natural places across the globe. Kirby’s love for the Blue Ridge Mountains and Blowing Rock, as well as her fervent belief that young people should be connected to the outdoors, inspired the Conservation Trust for North Carolina to place a Youth Conservation Corps crew on the trail this summer.

BACKGROUND: The NCYCC, a partnership between the Conservation Trust for North Carolina  and the Vermont Youth Conservation Corps, is a comprehensive youth development program that uses the natural world as a platform for teaching environmental stewardship, job and leadership skills, community service and personal responsibility.  This summer there were four crews deployed around the state; one of them worked the entire seven weeks on the Upper Thunderhole/China Creek Trail, in close coordination with the U.S. Forest Service. Each crew had six to eight crew members between the ages of 16 and 24, and one to two highly trained crew leaders. The crews worked 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, for 7 weeks and were paid minimum wage.  Each day also included a one-hour educational program focused on conservation and social topics.  The crews lived together at camp sites near their respective work projects.
