2) Limited Tickets, Bus Seats Remain for App-Clemson on Sept. 12

As excitement for Appalachian State University football’s Sept. 12 contest at ACC preseason favorite Clemson builds, Appalachian State’s allotment of tickets and space on Appalachian’s bus trip from Boone and Charlotte to the game is dwindling.

Only a limited number of tickets from the Mountaineers’ allotment for the Clemson game remain available through the Appalachian State athletics ticket office. Tickets can be purchased by phone at (828) 262-2079 or in person at the Appalachian State athletics ticket office, located at the Holmes Center.

Additionally, seats on the single-day bus trip are also moving fast but still available. The bus carrying Mountaineer faithful will depart from Kidd Brewer Stadium on Sept. 12 and make a stop at Northlake Mall in Charlotte before dropping fans off at the Appalachian Alumni Association tailgate party right outside of Clemson’s Memorial Stadium. Tickets for the bus trip, which includes ground transportation and a ticket to the Alumni Association tailgate party (but does not include a game ticket) costs just $110 for adults and $90 for youth (ages 12 and under). Fans can register online at appstatesports.com/promos or by phone at (828) 262-8649. Registration deadline is Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Appalachian State carries college football’s fifth-longest winning streak (six games) into its Sept. 5 season opener versus Howard at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Full-season, half-season and single-game tickets are still available for all six Mountaineer home games this fall and can be purchased online at appstatesports.com/tickets, by phone at (828) 262-2079 or in person at the Appalachian State athletics ticket office, located at the Holmes Center.

Coming off a 10-3 campaign, Clemson is ranked No. 12 in the preseason USA Today Top 25 poll. The Tigers also open their season at home on Sept. 5 versus Wofford.

The Sept. 12 Appalachian-Clemson matchup kicks off at 12:30 p.m.

5) Appalachian Storytelling with Dr. Charlotte Ross on Aug. 29

Saturday, August 29, 10 am

Watauga County Public Library

Meeting Room

Charlotte T. Ross, also known as “the Legend Lady,” has collected or composed more than 3,400 tales of legends and laughter from Appalachia. She is an energetic performer, playwright, folklorist, story-teller, and speaker with experience in storytelling concerts, theatrical performances, conferences, school residencies, and workshops. Above all, she is a teacher.

Charlotte engages the audience with each telling. Her legends convey emotional intensity as well as historical context; and her word pictures are vivid. She sometimes invites children onstage to participate in the folktales.

“The stories I have collected are replete with cultural values,” says Charlotte. “They embody the social norms, beliefs, and core values of a people. As a storyteller, I seek to carry this heritage of tales and to share its richness with many diverse audiences by arranging the selections thematically according to the need and goals of the sponsoring group. The stories communicate the power and pride and special beauty of the people of the Appalachian Mountains; they define us as a people.”

Charlotte has performed at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, Birmingham Chamber of Conference, Atlanta Historical Society, North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Corn Island Storytelling Festival, Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina Storytelling Festival, The Great Aunt Stella Center, Berea College, Kellogg Institute, Appalachian Studies Conference, Museum of Appalachia, Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in Ireland, and for the Smithsonian Institution Folklife Programs. She has been a featured storyteller on the National Public Radio All Things Considered “Story Tree.”

“I read somewhere that the task of a bard was to define a place and a people, to record history, to transmit cultural values, and to entertain using only the human voice and memory,” says Charlotte. “I guess I was meant to be a bard.”

Visit www.blueridgeheritage.com to learn about Dr. Charlotte Ross and other area storytellers and artists.

All ages are welcome to attend this storytelling event; recommended especially for adults and young people age 12 and up.
