Oct. 20, 2014. Multi-instrumentalist, multi-stylist, songwriter extraordinaire Jay Brown will perform a solo show at the Jones House Cultural and Community Center on Tuesday, Oct. 21, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Brown is most well-known in the High Country for his role as a founding member of The Lazybirds, a popular Americana roots band that continues to play the region after more than 15 years. Brown also plays with local gypsy jazz guitar group, Swing Guitars, featuring music of and ala Django Reinhardt. When not playing with another group, Brown performs solo with guitar, harmonica, foot percussion and lots of material.
“Jay is one of the most diverse musicians I know,” said concert organizer, Mark Freed. “He plays jazz, blues, rock, folk, Indian ragas and about any style you can imagine.”
People in the High Country have been hearing Brown’s sounds for many years with the aforementioned bands, busking on the streets of downtown and playing in restaurants, coffee shops and festivals. Since moving from Boone to Asheville about five years ago, Brown has also been quite busy writing and recording original material, issuing CDs of new material in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
“Jay’s solo recordings are really great with a diverse array of sounds and stories,” said Freed. “And they are recordings I return to for repeated listening, which says a lot to me about the quality of his songs and his tasteful arranging.”
Seats for the Tuesday evening concert are $20 each and can be reserved by contacting Mark Freed at 828-268-6280 or by email at mark.freed @townofboone.net.
