June 27, 2013. The Buckeye Recreation Center invites you to bring the youngsters to the Annual Kiddo Fishing Derby this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The tournament, taking place at Coffey Lake, is the perfect occasion to teach the kids how to reel in a big fish.
To enter your kids in the derby, arrive at Coffey Lake at 8:00 a.m. for registration, and remember to bring your own fishing rod. A limited number of rods are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Bait is also available for purchase.
Coffey Lake is stocked with trout for the derby. A limit of four fish may be caught, and the kids can take home their haul. Volunteers will put the fish on ice, and they can be taken home and eaten for dinner. If trout isn’t for you, hot dogs are served for purchase.
Children ages 4 to 12 may participate in the derby, and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Every child who registers for the derby is given a free raffle ticket, and drawings will be held throughout the event.
The derby is free of charge and is sponsored by the Buckeye Recreation Center. Prizes and trophies will be awarded for the first, largest and heaviest trout caught as well as for the first child to reach the four-trout limit. All children participating take home a prize.
To get to Coffey Lake, drive past Ski Beech resort on the Beech Mountain Parkway and take a right on Lake Road. Look for directional signs. For more information, contact Brie Powell of the Buckeye Recreation Center at 828-387-3003.
