Sept. 17, 2013. The Watauga County Board of Commissioners will hold three public hearings tonight, Tuesday, Sept. 17, to hear citizens’ comments. The public hearings start at 6 p.m. while the regularly scheduled board meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
The first public hearing regards naming the meeting room in the Watauga County Public Library the Evelyn Johnson Meeting Room, in honor of Evelyn Johnson, a former employee of the library for more than 30 years ago who unexpectedly passed away in January 2013. While the policy for naming county facilities requires a one-year wait, the board recently waived this requirement.
The second public hearing regards proposed changes to the county’s sign ordinance. The planning board developed changes to afford signage for agricultural tourism and similar businesses, to clarify language regarding campaign signs and to regulate – not prohibit – billboards, according to a memo in the meeting’s packet. The third public hearing lumps together proposed amendments to the following ordinances because all are related to the Board of Adjustment.
- Foscoe-Grandfather Community Zoning Ordinance
- Valle Crucis Historic District Ordinance
- Ordinance to Regulate Electronic Access Gates for Gated Communities
- Ordinance to Regulate Wireless Communications Towers
- Water Supply Watershed Protection Ordinances
“As these changes were mandated by the North Carolina General Assembly, little discretion is left for Commissioner consideration,” County Manager Deron Geouque wrote in a memo in the meeting’s packet to commissioners.
