Jan. 20, 2015. Late in the evening on Jan. 15, officers with the Avery County Sheriff’s Office received information about drug activity at a residence on Turbyfill Road.
Officers stopped a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, driven by 35-year-old Vance Storie of Newland, on Smokey Straight. A search of the vehicle and Storie resulted in charges against Storie for possession with intent to sell or distribute methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Storie was placed under a $30,000 bond in the Avery County Jail.
Officers then obtained a search warrant for the residence on Turbyfill Road. A search of the residence resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The investigation continued into the early hours of the following morning when a second traffic stop was made on a Dodge Dakota truck, driven by 42-year old James Berman Smith of Newland, and occupied by 49-year-old Brenda Harmon.
A search of the vehicle and the occupants resulted in charges against both for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Both were placed in Avery County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
