This Week’s Concert at the Jones House Features Kim France, Jon Davis, Dashboard Hula Boys and Lazybirds

Sept. 4, 2013. Kim France and Jon Davis, The Dashboard Hula Boys, and the Lazybirds will flock to the Jones House Porch this Friday in the continuation of the Town of Boone’s Summer Concerts at the Jones House, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“We have been looking forward to this concert all summer,” said concert organizer Mark Freed.

“These are all veteran High Country performers that will bring an array of good music to the streets of downtown Boone. We have so much good music that we are even starting the concert 30 minutes early to get it all in!”

A native of the area, Davis started playing guitar at age four, started performing at 12, wrote his first song at 13, and formed his first band at 14. He is the founder of Boss Hawg and performs with a host of High Country acoustic and bluegrass performers. France is a multi-instrumentalist most well-known for her work on the bass fiddle, which she plays in numerous local and regional groups including Boss Hawg, the Mercury Dames, Turbo Pro Project and the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra.

The Dashboard Hula Boys will follow France and Davis shortly after 5 p.m., bringing their mix of old-time blues, classic rock and Hawaiian-themed original songs. The acoustic trip includes Ed Midgett on Guitar, Bob White on bass, and Tom Whyte on harmonica, ukulele and tenor banjo. The Hula Boys have been together for a few years, but Midgett, White and Whyte have a long-standing musical relationship as the Lost Faculties and a variety of other names.

“These guys are really fun,” Freed said. “They have an eclectic taste in music and they really bring a wide variety of song types and styles into the mold of the Hula Boys.”

The concert will finish with The Lazybirds, an annual favorite for many of the Jones House concert-goers.

“The Lazybirds have made the Jones House concerts an annual event, and we are always glad to have them back to the porch,” Freed said.

The band formed in the High Country in 1996, bringing together influences from blues, jazz, country and ragtime music to play original songs, long-forgotten favorites and some familiar material as well.

Featuring Mitch Johnson on bass, James T. Browne on drums, Jay Brown on guitar and Alfred Michels on fiddle and guitar, the band continues to gain fans and get listeners out of their seats and on their feet.

The Concerts at the Jones House are produced by the Town of Boone and sponsored by the Downtown Boone Development Association, Mast General Store, Footsloggers, MPrints, Stick Boy Bread Co., Melanie’s and Farmer’s Rentals.

This week’s concert is also sponsored by the Appalachian Antique Mall on King Street. The free concerts take place every Friday starting at 5 p.m. rain or shine.
