Tournament to be held at the Linville Golf Club Course

By Tim Gardner

The third annual On A Course For A Cause Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Williams YMCA of Avery County, will be held Monday, May 4 at one of the world’s most famous and picturesque courses–the Linville Golf Club Course.

The tournament format is Texas Scramble (or Shamble). Each team member drives from the Tee at each Hole. The best drive for the team is chosen and each team member plays their ball from that point forward. The best ball from each team will be used and prizes will be awarded for the top gross scores and the top net scores with United States Gold Association (USGA) handicaps used to determine the net scores.

The cost to play is $250 per player (tax deductible except for $100 which is the value received by participating). A foursome may play for $1,000. The entry fee includes lunch, favors, cart fees, practice balls and an awards social immediately following the tournament.

A maximum of Two Mulligan’s per golfer will be available for a round at a cost of $10 each.

The tournament schedule includes: Registration & Range (10:30 a.m.); Lunch (11:30 a.m.); Shotgun Start (1:00 p.m.); and awards program and cocktails (6:00 p.m.).

Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place net and gross teams and to winners of all on course challenges. Gift Certificates to the Linville Golf Club Pro Shop will be awarded for the First, Second, and Third best Net and Gross teams, and other on-course winners.

All tournament proceeds will be dedicated to the Williams YMCA of Avery County’s Y-Access scholarship fund for those who need its assistance most. At the YMCA, no child, family or adult are turned away due to their inability to pay.

Williams YMCA of Avery County contact Michelle Scott said the event is “friendly and will be fun for all.”

She added: “What an incredible opportunity for local golfers to shake off winter and play golf for a great cause—everything about this tournament is for our kids who most need what the Y offers!”

The purpose of this year’s tournament also will be to celebrate the life of the late Marjorie Horn Williams, known in the North Carolina High Country for her humility and generosity, and whose family is the namesake of the Avery County YMCA.

Since childhood, Williams spent time in Linville. She gave back to her favorite place and its people through her contributions to the Williams Family YMCA of Avery County, located in Linville, and the Crossnore School in Crossnore. Her legacy continues to live on through the Williams YMCA of Avery County. Since its inception in 2007, more than 2,500 children have learned to swim for free, thousands of residents have benefited from provided scholarship funding, five new Chronic Disease Prevention and Management Programs have begun and the YMCA has opened the John M. Blackburn Indoor Athletic Facility and the Paul and Susie O’Connell Fieldhouse.

Every day the YMCA strives to plan, develop, and implement programs that will ensure that all people are given the chance to learn, grow, and thrive. Williams’ commitment to youth and service to the YMCA is an example for all to follow.

“Mrs. Williams did as much as she could to help as many people as she could,” Scott said. “Those of us involved with YMCA want that legacy to go on and do good for people because Marjorie Horn Williams and her family made this world a better place. That should be a priority of everyone whose life she touched. And is a reason we have the golf tournament in her honor and memory. ”

There are various ways to donate money to tournament even for those who not play in it. The donation levels include: A Friend of Marjorie Horn Williams ($100); Tee Sponsor ($200); Luncheon Sponsor ($500); Par Sponsor ($1,000); Birdie Sponsor ($5,000); and an Eagle Sponsor ($10,000). Every gift counts towards YMCA’s 2018 fundraising goal of $350,000 and Scott noted that participating in this tournament helps change lives in a most positive manner.

In case on inclement weather on May 4, the tournament will be rescheduled.
