The Watauga Humane Society’s Bare Bones Boutique Holds Bag Sale to Raise Funds for the Animals

by Madison V. Fisler

Oct. 2, 2013. The Watauga Humane Society’s Bare Bones Boutique will host their famous Brown Bag Sale this week to help raise funds for the organization to take care of the many needy animals that depend on them.

imgresThe Brown Bag sale includes all clothing-related items (shoes, purses, scarves) that you can fill a bag with. Each bag costs $5.33 (including tax) and there is no bag limit per customer.

The sale will run Thursday and Friday, Oct. 3 and 4 from noon to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

“We try to do this sale at least once a year,” said Judy Clark, a member of the board who also runs the Bare Bones Boutique.

“We see it as our end of the season sale. Last year we made around $500, and that’s $5 at a time!”

All of the money made from the sale, and from the Bare Bones Boutique as a whole, goes straight to the animals and their needs. Each year, Bare Bones Boutique alone raises around $31,000 for the animals including donations and sales, according to Clark.

It all started when the Watauga Humane Society moved into their new location in 2003. With the property that now houses the animals, the organization also received a house on the grounds which was perfect for a thrift shop.

“We had a little thrift shop at the other property but it was very small. It began as a place to store stuff for our yearly rummage sale, and people would come by and ask to buy things, so it kind of evolved out of that. When we got this new place and it had the house here, we knew it would be perfect.”

The Bare Bones Boutique at the Watauga Humane Society is located at Old U.S. 421 next to Rutherwood Church. For more information, please call 828-264-7339.

And after you stop by Bare Bones Boutique for the Brown Bag Sale, be sure to head over to the Humane Society to play with some pups or cuddle with some kitties before you head back with your new found treasures.
