WHS Playmakers

Oct. 23, 2014. On Monday, Oct. 27, the Watauga High School Honors Acting Class, the Pioneer Playmakers, will perform, “A Fable,” their entry for the North Carolina Theatre Conference High School Play Festival.

Written as a collaborative musical by Jean-Claude van Itallie, “A Fable” tells the story of the Village of People who Live by the Lake. A Journeyor is sent by the villagers to visit the king, who gives the journeyor an incredible task to accomplish. Along the way, the journeyor travels to many places and meets many people.

“It’s a very physical and symbolic play,” said Playmaker director Sarah Miller. “What Mr. Walker and I love about this piece is that it’s unusual – it’s not your average production, and we are really enjoying the artistic challenges of this show.”

In addition to having the help of co-director and Drama Department teacher Zach Walker, the Playmakers are assisted by several other WHS and local musicians. Laurie Nicholson directs the music and accompanies on piano, along with bass player and WHS senior Jon Church. WHS instrumental music teacher Tim Walker is the percussionist for the ensemble. Senior technician Gabby Moody rounds out the support team for this production.

Tickets for “A Fable” are $5 and will be available at the door of the WHS Ross Auditorium on Monday, Oct. 27. Show time is 7 p.m.

“The work that this ensemble is creating is incredible,” said Miller, “and we can’t wait to share this work with our community.”
