The Watauga Arts Council Hosts the May Installment of the Second Saturday Celebration on Saturday, May 10

May 7, 2014. The Watauga Arts Council will host the May installment of the Second Saturday Arts Celebration at the Blue Ridge ArtSpace located at 377 Shadowline Drive in Boone. The event will take place on Saturday, May 10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The featured gallery exhibits are as follows:

The Main Gallery

imgresThe main gallery will feature “Mae in May” by Rebekah Mae Trapp, who was raised in Laurel Springs and is an emerging artist with no formal training. She maintains that she had always wanted to be an artist, but had never really pursued it. After watching her husband, the renowned painter and sculptor Wayne Trapp, at work and seeing how much he enjoyed it, she finally got up the nerve to begin with Wayne as her instructor. Under his guidance Mae has blossomed into an accomplished artist. She works as an abstract painter using oil and wax on canvas.

The Open Door Gallery

Just as the political mudslinging is reaching a resolution with the recent primaries, the Arts Council is showcasing a totally different type of mudslinging! Celebrating the talents of the clay artists of our community, the Arts Council has extended an invitation to all who work in clay whether it be functional or purely for the fun of it. Among the artists who are sharing their works this month are Tena Wenta, Tara Belk, Rachel Bigley, Becki Henderson-Gow, Black Kennedy, Theresa McGrath, Keith Lambert, Cindy Pacileo and Willi Baucom. Their creations range from functional vessels to strikingly ornate and downright whimsical pieces.

Serendipity Gallery

Marsha Holmes’ students have been busily drawing everything within an eye’s reach from building, to family and friends, to cute little critters, inspiring scenery and still life compositions. Most of the pieces in the show are of graphite with a few colored pencils and an occasional marker thrown in for good measure. Artists whose work are included are Katherine Fisher, Ken Poe, David Richardson, Susan Lindgren, Julia Grace May, Beverly Stahl, Sandra Smack, Judy Clarke, Marsha Holmes, Linda Lielbriedis, Cherry Burns and William Craven Bass.

The Tarheel Footprints Children’s Gallery

The gallery will feature works of art created by the art students at Hardin Park Elementary School. Their art teacher is Chard Safferstone. Like all elementary art teachers in Watauga County, Chad divides his time between Hardin Park and Bethel Elementary Schools. The brilliantly colored works he is showcasing in the Children’s Gallery are influenced by lessons focused on exploring the works of Picasso and include a self-portrait series created of oil pastels which is complimented by a series of colorful paper collages based on Picasso’s famed “Three Musicians.”

All of the galleries are sponsored by Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff.

Each of the five  classrooms will feature a new arts adventure.  Among the featured artists this month are Author Lory Whitehead, whose book “Reluctant Warriors” is a compilation of letters, memoirs, and poetry written over a period of nearly 50 years and are based on war stories she gathered from veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and her own experiences while serving in the US Army, Katherine Marx (who teaches children’s art classes with the Blue Ridge ArtSpace but will be sharing her own wonderful work with us), Shirley Hampton (whose lively and colorful paintings were featured recently in the Open Door Gallery), and Birgitta McGailliard, whose book “Lives Divided” is a personal family memoir of her own family’s experiences during the 2nd World War and their miraculous reuniting against all odds during those terrible times.

There will also be plenty of shopping in the Gift Shop, and light refreshments.   All WCAC Members are reminded that, during the 2nd Saturday weekend, they are entitled to a 10% discount while shopping in the Gift Shop….just for showing their membership card!   Since we are closed on Sundays, by WCAC definition, the 2nd Saturday weekend is defined as Friday and Saturday – which in May means the 9th and 10th.
