July 31, 2013. On Aug. 10, the Life Care Center of Banner Elk will host a Back to School Fling from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Life Center.

At the fling, Avery County children from grades K-8 will have the opportunity to  come out and gather up school supplies at no cost to their families.

imgres-2School supplies for the kids are being collected with the help of local businesses, who are pledging to donate items such as pencils, composition books, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, safety scissors, glue sticks, backpacks, erasers and much more to help Avery County students in need.

“There are close to 1,000 K-8 students in the Avery County school system,” said Star Gardner of the Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

“There is a need here in the county and it will be a fun time for the kids. We are going to try to have a bouncy house and hot dogs too.”

While some businesses are donating supplies, still others are volunteering their time for the event or setting up booths at the spring fling to give out their own supplies. Residents of the Life Care Center will be helping out as well, greeting the children and helping to hand out the school supplies.

In lieu of a supply donation, people can also donate money to the  cause. Volunteers are also welcome, and can sign up by calling Jennifer Berry in the activity department at 828-898-5136.

The deadline for donations is Aug. 1.
